Lo Chair Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of the Electromagnetics Laboratory and Center for Computational Electromagnetics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He authored The Finite Element Method in Electromagnetics (Wiley) and Electromagnetic Analysis and Design in Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and co-authored Computation of Special Functions (Wiley), Finite Element Analysis of Antennas and Arrays (Wiley), and Fast and Efficient Algorithms in Computational Electromagnetics. A Fellow of the IEEE, he is listed by ISI among the world’s most cited authors.

Beautiful Binding and New Examples - Good Update to a Modern Classic

This was the book I learned electromagnetics and computational electromagnetics from, so I was very excited to hear that a second edition was in the works. I purchased my copy as soon as it became available.
The second edition is an incremental improvement over the excellent previous edition of this book. The first thing you will notice is that the entire book is printed in color on glossy paper. This is a significant improvement over the first edition as the book is much more pleasant to hold and a pleasure to flip through.
In terms of content, many worked example problems are now inserted in the electromagnetic theory chapters, which comprises the first half of the book. These include both trivial problems to demonstrate the concept being discussed, as well as more involved problems that demonstrates problem solving techniques to readers who may be learning electromagnetics theory on their own by reading this book. This new additional material makes the book a much more useful independent learning source whereas the first edition was designed more as a textbook that is to be read in conjunction of going to lectures and doing homework problems.
The real bonus of this book when compared with other graduate engineering electromagnetic textbooks (Balanis, Harrington, etc) is the second half of the book, which provides an up-to-date and in-depth discussion of computational electromagnetic techniques. The presentation of Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method for computational EM is so simple and clear, that my undergraduate students have been able to produce their own FDTD code based purely on reading this chapter. The author is the world-leading expert on Finite Element Method (FEM) and the chapter on FEM provides a very in-depth discussion of the state-of-the-art of this technique. It is easier to read than the author's monograph on the subject. The chapters on Method of Moments (MoM) and hybrid techniques completes the second half of the book, and prepares the reader to be able to understand and appreciate the latest research papers on computational electromagnetics.
This second edition is a good update to a modern classic, and I strongly encourage everyone who wants to familiarize themselves with graduate-level engineering electromagnetics and computational electromagnetics to consider this book as a learning resource.

I have to say I'm glad this update comes in

This book is a recent update of its first edition, which has been used in University of Illinois as the textbook for a series of graduate EM courses in the ECE department. As a student at U of I, I took both courses with the first edition, but bought this second edition at its very first debut. I have to say I'm glad this update comes in. Here are some of my thoughts: spoiler alert, it's a great book.

Aside from contents commonly covered in other classic EM textbooks, this book dedicates a significant portion of its content (the second half) to an introductory survey on computational electromagnetics, which includes the most popular CEM methods. The theoretical part starts from the very basics in EM and gradually progress to some of the advanced topics like wave transformation and addition theorem. The coverage of these advanced topics are excentlly chosen in a sense that: a) they are useful and rather basic ideas for the CEM part of the book; b) they provide a decent foundation from which the readers can progress to more advanced EM monographs.

For this second edition, the most significant change is the addition of Examples. These examples are either basic ones that show you the problem solving process in graduate level EM, or are rather complicated ones that extend and deepen the topics covered in the first edition. In short, I believe working out these examples is a great exercise if you want to excel at your course, or are simply interested in EM.

Last but not least, the paper is of great quality and the figures are nice and beautiful. A well printed, well bound book.

Most Useful and Beautiful Textbook in EM and CEM

The 2nd edition of Theory and Computation of Electromagnetic fields is the most useful textbook I have ever seen. It systematically discusses the fundamentals as well as some advanced topics in both electromagnetic theory and numerical methods in electromagnetics. In the theory part, it starts from the overview of Maxwell's equation and review of vector analysis, and then discusses the specific topics in detail such as electromagnetic theorems and principles, wave radiation, scattering, and propagation in free space and three coordinate systems. Compared with electromagnetic knowledge covered by electrodynamics books, this book not only helps you build up a solid fundamental in electromagnetic theory, but also leads you to solve very practical problems using the theory. In the numerical method part, it introduces three most popular numerical methods (FDTD, FEM, and MoM), the hybrid methods, and fast algorithms. It covers all the classic methods a beginner should know in computational electromagnetics. All the derivations are very clear and detailed!

This book is also a very beautiful book. The whole book is made of high-quality papers with color pictures. The feel of reading this book is like reading a high-quality magazine! It is very enjoyable to hold this book on hands and read all the materials.

Class Act

This book gives a clear picture of Sampras' personality which is pretty similiar to his game-straight forward, aggressive when necessary, and well rounded. Sampras tells of his parents' sacrifice so that he could become a champion, and his admiration of their values is evident throughout the book. He also tells of small sibling rivalries; helping his sister deal with Robert Landsorph, who seems to lose all of his students from Austin to Davenport to other coaches because of his belligerent demeanor; and the desinegration of his relationship with Pete Fisher after Fisher's arrest for child molestation. Tennis attracts a strange crowd, and the Sampras family may have found the strangest in Fisher who has taken more credit for Sampras' game than Pete gives him here. Who is to say which of the two is correct? In regard to his rivals, Sampras speaks in detail and honestly. His page or so that he gives to Connors is probably longer than any conversation between the two. Sampras also does a good job of showing the Jekyll and Hyde personality of McEnroe. He gives Lendl his due as an underated champion whose accomplishments are perhaps greater than Connors' or McEnroe's, a kind person, and someone who took time to help a future champion, Sampras at the age 17(Yes, the time with Lendl may have caused the bias). He also thoroughly analyzes the games, friendships, and rivalies with Agassi, Courier, Chang, and Martin. Finally, he nods to Federer as a worthy player to break his records, classy again. As far as romantic relationships, an important point to make is that unlike McEnroe, Sampras does not tell anything of his first girlfriend Delana Mulcahy who is substantially older than he and left Sampras for someone even younger or of his relationship with Kimberly Williams. For his not telling the dirt, he has certainly more class than McEnroe whose children will someday read what dad said about all the cokeheads he dated and the disturbing marriage to mom, Tatum O'Neal. Sampras does state that tennis took a priority and cost him until he met Bridgette Wilson. On a different note, one complaint-somebody needed to do a better job on the proofing. There are a number of cliches, and there seems to be no understanding about the difference between I and me, an English teacher's complaint. Regardless, Sampras' book reveals a champion and person of great character.

It is as he is

This is a regurgitation of Pete Sampras' career as he saw it. This is not an in depth analysis. For example, no mention of his first two girlfriends that traveled with him extensively. Nor, is it substantially in depth on match play, a point her or there but generally an overview of the match with many matches in important tournaments skipped completely.

But what this book does perfectly is a general perspective of Pete's influences, how he developed and also how hurt he was by some of what the press said. How would you like to turn the TV on and listen to an announcer call your wife the Yoko Ono of tennis?

What comes through loud and clear is this is a class, quiet guy with a passion and ability for tennis. And that was enough for him. Unfortunately, it was not enough for Connors and McEnroe who at different times felt they needed to take shots at him.

Now, I must admit I am a big Pete Sampras fan so maybe the bar is lower for me. But reading the flow of his development and career, his great parental influence, and the setting of his career makes this a worthwhile book if you have any interest in tennis at all. I strongly recommend this book for tennis fans.

An easy and compelling read

An easy and compelling read, that tells he forgotten story of civilians caught up in the Revolution and the trials they endured when captured by raiding parties. It give a first have story of generally fair treatment of prisoners by Indians and the British sponsors. I was surprised to learn this aspect of history..

Captivating history

This book was a well-told account of a really fascinating piece of history. A raid on the frontier-area of Vermont ends up with captives being sent to a British prison island in Canada. You get a good feel for what was going on with the British during the war (not an angle you always hear about when it comes to the Revolutionary War) and the escape itself is really amazing (think the 1963 "The Great Escape" movie, that's what it reminded me of) and then that's only the start of their troubles as they have to find their way through the wilderness back home.

A quick read, more fast pace then I was expecting from a history book. It's not too long - a good chunk of the book is a lengthy introduction about the historical background and there's a lengthy section on the references at the end, so it's not as long as it seems by the thickness of the book.

I appreciated that this was history and not historical fiction. While the author tried to give you a feel for what it would have been like, he doesn't overdo it. He always maintains his position as historian and researcher. He uses a lot of actual quotes from journals, and makes it clear where information came from. If accounts contradict each other or if there's reason to believe someone might be exaggerating or not being honest, he'll tell you why he thinks so.

on both sides, the whim of leadership in charge of POWs, and the strength of those who survived and outwitted
