This Book Saved Me from the Siren Song of the 60's

Isn't that an odd thing to say about a book whose title starts with the word "sex?"

Well, around 1964 one of my parents brought this book home, although neither of them would ever confess to the deed. Whoever it was, they did me a big favor. When the folks weren't watching, I swiped the book and devoured it in a single long sitting.

Helen Gurley Brown should have entitled this masterwork "All the Hard-Nosed Things that Young Women in the So-Called Pre-Feminist Era Need to Know about Money, Career, Independence, Women's Rights, and The Way Things Unfortunately Are. And Oh Yes, Sex. That." However, the book would undoubtedly have sold fewer copies if the title had truly reflected the contents, so it's just as well they hyped the sex part.

Under the impression that I was going to get to read some really naughty stuff, I studied Brown's book with the intensity I would later reserve for pre-calculus. Brown was the friendly, more experienced adult ("Aunt Helen," I liked to think of her) who cut the BS and told you how it really was with respect to a number of important subjects, often contradicting the messages of the dominant 60's culture, as it materialized later in the decade.

Money? Girl, Woodstock or not, you will need it when you are no longer "pristinely young," so get a career and earn it. You will appreciate the freedom and self-respect it brings you. Do the very best you can with whatever abilities you have and the education you can get, and the rewards will carry you through the inevitable bad times that everybody faces. Beauty? Even if you are gorgeous, don't put all your eggs in that basket, because your beauty will fade, and then where will you be if that's the only card you ever played? Love? It is NOT all you need, no matter what the Beatles say. Marriage? Fine, fabulous (Brown herself has been married over forty years), but don't pin all your reasons for living - or your financial survival -- on a guy. Guys are just fallible human beings. Don't give up your ability to stand on your own two feet when you fall in love, because there are no guarantees in life, ever. As Brown eloquently put it, in middle age (or at any time before) a man can leave a woman "like dishes in the sink" if he wants to badly enough. Exercise and a healthy diet? Essential to self-respect. Property ownership (or at least having a fine apartment)? Also essential, particularly when you get older; living in a garage apartment furnished with orange crates is cute when you're twenty, but pathetic when you're forty.

I came of age in the late 60's and early 70's, when the culture was telling us to tune in, turn on, and drop out. Don't conform, don't join the establishment, don't become the man or the woman in the gray flannel suit, don't throw away your life working and forget to smell the roses. Follow your dreams and the universe will magically provide.

This was good advice as far as it went. It sounded so great, and it really was well meant and idealistic and heartfelt...if only it had been true. Unfortunately, it should have been taken with a small but healthy dose of skepticism. Such as, yes, do follow your dreams, but along the way learn some marketable skills, okay? However, the cultural mindset discouraged us from planning for the future, or thinking seriously about money, financial issues, and practical things. We might have known with our minds that the Woodstock generation would eventually get much, much older, but we didn't believe it.

I, however, had Aunt Helen whispering in my ear, so around age thirty I finally rolled up my sleeves, quit hanging out in Austin drinking dark beer and swimming in Barton Springs, and got an advanced degree and a good job -- but did plan things so I still had some time to smell the roses. I couldn't have done it without her advice. At the end of the day, although Brown was not considered a "real" feminist, and in fact came in for a great deal of scorn on that account, she helped me every bit as much as the rest of them.

She wasn't into rhetoric, ideology, or internecine wars with the sisters, she just gave good hardheaded advice about the way things were, like it or not, that's city hall so just deal with it. She liked men. They were people, they had their problems, but generally they were pretty nice. This was quite a relief to those of us who liked them too, even though there were times when it wasn't politically correct to dwell on it. She just didn't believe that liking men required her to give up everything else worthwhile in life, or her ability to provide for herself.

Yeah yeah, like just about everybody else I take issue with her rather Darwinian attitude about carrying on with married men. However, as the writer Molly Ivins would say, she had the guts to tell young women how the cow ate the cabbage. I honor her for that.

Life changing event

I bought this book recently just because it is the book I that changed my life. I read it originally when it was first published. I was a recent high school graduate in a steel town culture in Western Pennsylvania. I read it and my whole approach to life changed. I went to collage (first one in my family), became successful in the technology world (only one in my family), ended up in New York city (well I regard this as a benefit). None of these things (as well as all the side effects that came with them) would have happened if I had not read this book. I don't know if it would have that impact on today's teenagers, but I bought it again in 2014 on the occasion of my retirement to see what it could have said to trigger all these events.

a bit dated, but entertaining view into the world of women (mad men style) back in the 60's, 70's. surprisingly accurate advice back then about healthy eating and nutrition--that has been since confirmed by science and 50 years of experience.

FvJvA Nightmare Warriors #1

I liked it but not enough happened. There are quite a few nods to the films like two people from one of nightmare on elm street films, I believe Dream Child, but I'm not sure, at a theater watching Army of Darkness. Oh yeah, Ash has a spatula hand. Overall it was pretty good, but I think people who aren't fans of all three films will like it very much, but thats just me.

Irene Cohen-Janca is a multi-award-winning author who has published many novels and picture books for children. Her book Les arbres pleurent aussi, also illustrated by Maurizio Quarello, has been translated into nine languages. She lives in France.

Maurizio A.C. Quarello is an Italian illustrator of more than 30 children's books published across Europe. His work has won several awards and has been exhibited in galleries in France and the U.S.

They Called Him “Mister Doctor”

Janusz Korczak was a pediatrician who gave up a potentially lucrative practice to found an orphanage for the children he loved. And the children loved him; the nickname they gave their mentor was “Mister Doctor.” In this book by the same title, his story is told from the perspective of one of the orphans—who could be any of the orphans or all the orphans.

The book opens with the last days in final period of the famous orphanage on Krochmalna Street; the Nazis invaded Warsaw on September 1, 1939, and shortly thereafter ordered the city’s Jewish population into the Warsaw Ghetto. The journey is one fraught with darkness and fear, as shown by the somber illustrations showing barbed wire. They walk past the house of horrors they know as the Black Palace. (I believe the author was referring to the infamous Pawiak Prison; I doubt the children actually passed that landmark, as it was on the opposite side of the Ghetto. However, the episode adds literary value to the narrative.) The horrors of the trek are in marked contrast to the soft, warm hands of Doctor Korczak and illustration of his favorite fairy tale character, Puss in Boots, bounding over a barbed blockade.

Their new home was the best Korczak could find, but “the house of tears” at 33 Chlodna Street is clearly nothing like their beautiful old home; in one illustration, even the houseflies on the window sill are dead. Though flashbacks, the narrator recalls all the Old Doctor’s innovations: the children’s court, their newspaper, the bulletin board, postcards…. In the Ghetto, everyone clings to hope by celebrating their Jewish heritage and identity. Some children learn Hebrew. A professor teaches the children a poem, “Brothers,” by the great local poet, I.L Peretz, which they make into a song: “Light and dark, and in between/ All the colors come together./ We are all sisters and brothers/ From one father and one mother,/ And God created all of us./ The whole world is our nation. / We are all sisters and brothers.”

The most poignant part of the life of Janusz Korczak is the final march, which has been remembered in diaries, poems, movies, and statues. In Mister Doctor, the last walk is portrayed in a beautiful fold-out. But the story does not end there; the Rights of the Child would be taken up by the U.N. and given global stature. Perhaps little Henryk’s canary wasn’t buried after all. Perhaps he flew up into the heavens.

Mister Doctor is a picture book, but with the amount of text on each page, it is more suitable for older children to read on their own. The illustrations are beautifully executed and complement the narrative perfectly. The book is a little pricey, but the quality of materials is exceptional; it is issued in a library binding. Clearly, this is a book to be kept and treasured. It is curious that Mister Doctor is also available as an e-book. I fear an electronic medium would not do justice to the work of art this book is. The title is noteworthy, as it is the same as the first Polish biography, the one written by Hanna Olczak, who knew Korczak and Madame Stefa personally. A two page biography of Janusz Korczak puts the narrative in perspective; that, along with a short bibliography, will help students doing a book report—or a report on Mister Doctor himself, to pass his legend on.

Excellent, a must read!

Dr. Korczak is Mr. doctor. Mr. Doctor lives on the top floor of an orphanage for Jewish children. He ran the orphanage in a way that was considered revolutionary. The children rule themselves. Why did Mr. Doctor do this? Why did the children agree to do it? Amazingly, the children do. Mr. Doctor also gives the children different cards, one for doing good, one for memories (a way to remember a special experience) etc. When the Nazis come and take the orphans to the ghetto, Mr. Doctor decides to make it fun by having the children pretend they are a circus parade. When it is time to leave the ghetto, the good Mr. Doctor goes with them rather than accepting the opportunity to live. Why?

This true story is amazing. It grabs you as you read. The author writes this simply but elegantly. You are drawn into it also by the excellent illustrations. I finished the book with my heart fully engaged as it is a sad but necessary book to read so we do not forget the horror of the Nazis.

Good Book to Intro Kids to the Holocaust

Written in a story format and told from the point of view of one of the children, Mister Doctor is the story of Janusz Korczak and his orphans during WWII. Even though he was famous, he still chose to stay with his young charges to their ultimate end. Mister Doctor is aimed at students in the lower grades. The drawings and sketches effectively show the dreary reality that the children lived in with stunning artistry. Janusz Korczak was and is famous in his native Poland as a writer, military doctor, and champion of children. It is great that he can become known elsewhere.

Dr. John von Rohr has sixteen years of highly successful experience operating charter schools that have won recognition at both national and state levels. A twenty-one year veteran of the U.S. Army, to include serving on the staff and faculty at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, he is very knowledgeable about all aspects of charter school operation, to include the start-up phase. Starting out with his first charter school leadership position in 1999, charter schools under his leadership have consistently excelled, to include his current school, Spartanburg Prep, located in downtown Spartanburg, SC, which has earned the grade of “A” on three consecutive State Report Cards, to include a 98.3% composite score for the 2013-2014 school year. In 2013, his charter school received recognition as a “Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School.” He recently became a member of the Blue Ribbon Schools assessment team for charter schools.

Great for Preppers

Ham Radio Go Bag by Max Cooper was exactly what I was looking for. As a licensed ham radio operator I have been wanting to put together a go bag. After conducting a Google search the majority of the links related to ‘go bags’ are for ARES and RACES which I am not interested in doing. These go bags contain so much gear that you need a vehicle to transport all the equipment. Carrying that amount of equipment would not be conductive to an emergency where you need to be mobile and portable. Ham Radio Go Bag is about creating a go bag that is light, mobile, and effective. The information is geared towards the individual or small group who wants to have an effective method of communicating during an emergency. I really liked how the author set up the Hazard 4 Tonto Mini-Messenger bag which seems perfect. The Maxpedition Remora also looked like a viable option. The emphasis on a well-rehearsed communications plan was also valuable. Who is this book for?

Overall Assessment-Ham Radio Go Bag by Max Cooper is well written and most of all practical. The
information was specific to what I have been looking for to create my personal radio go bag. For some reason there does not seem to be a lot of information on the topic of go bags for individuals so I think this book is a highly needed resource.

Very good information for a novice, starting out in comms. Basic, yet important, information that one can understand without getting bogged down in technical language. I appreciate how simple, yet informative this books is. Yes, if you are beginning in this area of your preps, this book is a good start down the road of comms.
