Unlike so many diet books, this cheery addition to the self-help shelves wasn't written by a nutritionist or a fitness pro, but rather by a "creativity expert" who "accidentally stumbled upon a weight-loss secret that works" while teaching a creative "unblocking course." While this might sound like so much snake oil, the optimism and common-sense attitude of author Cameron (The Artist's Way) are winning. Her system is both simple and inexpensive, promoting exercise, food journaling, and something called "morning pages," which are stream-of-consciousness passages dieters record after getting out of bed: "A day at a time, a page at a time, we become mindful, acutely attuned to our personal feelings." The second half of the book is filled with exercises, some more goofy than practical ("if your museum has a gift shop, buy yourself five postcards glorifying the body type you've got"), and stories detailing chronic overeaters paths' to weight loss success. These stories are sometimes inspiring, sometimes repetitive, but should motivate dieters to give writing a try.

I Really Wanted to Love This . . .

. . . but I don't. It's OK. This book was written in 2007 and I found the first part - The Tools - to be of value. Ms. Cameron suggests the use of her tried and true methods of Morning Pages, a daily walk, and the Artist's Date along with a number of additional tools, and I found these to really be of value. I also think that the exercises after each essay - in both parts - are valuable. However, as others have mentioned, she is very strong on fake sugar and although she mentions avoiding highly processed food at least once, the constant references to low-fat, diet Jello, diet puddings, etc. is very old school (again, the book was published in 2007). Part Two of the book did not speak to me at all (and I am a huge fan of Ms. Cameron's work). There was also a LOT of 1960's Weight Watchers-speak in the form of terms such as "legal" and "illegal" foods. Take what you need to gain your own balance and leave the rest on the table.

Creativity and Overeating

This outstanding new book from creativity guru Julia Cameron explores the idea that creativity can block overeating, and the opposite, that overeating can block creativity. After reading the book, and trying it out it my own life, I know that this is true for me.

Using seven key tools, readers are given ideas to overcome their problems with overeating. The seven tools are morning pages (stream of consciousness writing in the mornings), journaling (especially at times of being tempted to overeat), walking, asking oneself four key questions about hunger and food choices, culinary artist dates, HALT (hungry-angry-lonely-tired), and the body buddy.

This book will be of key interest to anyone who does creative work. However, it will also be helpful to those who do not...releasing blocked creativity can be an important aid in dealing with overeating and weight issues.

The book also includes almost forty chapters that cover "situations and solutions" like relapse, night eating, food as sedative, affirmations, and much more. The are part musings from Julia Cameron, part common sense advice about weight loss, and part wisdom from twelve step programs. All combine to make a powerful program of recovery for those people who are open to writing and/or to accessing their creativity in a more powerful way while at the same time empowering themselves to deal with their food issues.

I found this book very helpful and inspirational. I don't know of anything else like it out there. Each of the fifty or so chapters has exercises you can do at the end, and I can't imagine how this could not be helpful for anyone who is open to working even a few of the ideas the author puts forth.

This Book Changed My Life

I have been a member of Weight Watchers for some time, and I was doing quite well but the weight was coming off (very) slowly. I started reading this book with very low expectations of weight loss happening due to writing. I read along and followed her advice about journaling, and wow - the weight really did come off! This book really gave me a clear way to look at the results of my daily actions. I learned a lot about myself which really helped me become a healthier person. This book absolutly changed the way I think about myself and has helped me change my life in the most positive ways! Of course, just reading it did not make me magically lose weight, but I was open to try something new and doing the writing exercises and following her suggestions did help me see what my real issues were and I was able to give myself solutions to many of my problems. (For one example: I now know that I eat when I'm too tired. If I don't get at least 8 hours of sleep, I'll totally mess up my eating plan for the next day. This is a simple thing, but I did not realize it until I started journaling.)

I can't recommend this book enough. I've even bought it for a Christmas gift for my mother and I give it credit for my successful 2008 resolution to be in the healthy BMI range. Thank you Julia Cameron!

Almost perfect - Powerful biography of the Final Prophet (PBUH)

Yahya Emerick has written a masterful and gripping account of the incredible life led by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). His ability to keep the reader interested at all times is the key to this book. He keeps matters simple yet accurate without getting lost in the overwhelming topic literature that exists out there. Just like another reviewer mentioned earlier I too felt like I was right there with the Prophet (pbuh) and his Companions. The tone and the content are consistent and give a fair, balanced view of the background that led to many events. A classic example of the author's writing ability is displayed in the inspiring and almost poetic narration of Al-Miraj and Al-Isra. The book also maintains its balance while educating the reader regarding the Prophet's personal, spiritual, political and uniquely influential life.

The only section of the book that deviates from this incredible uniformity stretches roughly from page 154-160. The content here regarding the prelude to the Battle of Badr (missed attempts at attacking Abu Sufyan's loaded Meccan caravan) and the Prophet's actions is rather questionable in light of the authentic material available on the matter. This very small but crucial part of the book seems out of place as it ascribes actions far less than prophetic to one (the Prophet) who had such a close relationship with God and His angel Gabriel.

Overall this is the finest account of the Prophet's life that I've read so far; far more interesting than Martin Lings' book and far superior to the book from Karen Armstrong. Highly recommended.

Must Read:
This is a definite "Must Read" for all Muslims, not just converts.
He writes with sensitivity beyond what one usually finds in a biographical work. I did find,in reading this, many of the passages in the Quran became clearer.
I had set out to read only religious material during the month of Ramadan and this was the first book I chose. After reading it, through my local library, I immediately went into Amazon.com and bought the book. I did this with the next book I read also. That is "In The Footsteps Of The Prophet." If you want to see what I thought of that one, then check out my review when they send me the request to do so. :)
Br. Emerick is a marvelous writer. I am now going to write my review of his "An Idiots Guide To Islam" Insha Allah. YUP, bought that too!

The author's own Mother endorses the book!

Daughters Rising contains the key to many of mysteries of the life-long power in the mother/daughter relationship. I recommend engaging in its relationship exercises with your mother. As Katherine’s mother, I found that the informal precursors to the exercises helped me to see with both amazement, regret and, ultimately, more understanding…... limitations I unwittingly passed down. Katherine and I still talk and the growth continues.
In self-defense, I mention that most of the examples in her book seem to come from her intimate knowledge of mother/daughter relationships from clients she has treated over the years rather than our personal relationship.
We are all daughters of Mothers! And we can rise above limitations that were unwittingly passed down from mother to daughter. While some of the exercises in the “love-in” may cause us pain, hopefully, they will ultimately be growing pains.

Lee Geok Boi is a Straits Chinese with a life-long experience in all aspects of good food from eating, to cooking and writing. She combines her interest in cooking with travel and her food experiences spanned the globe when she went around the world without flying. She was a food critic for several Singapore newspapers, namely New Nation, The Straits Times and The Sunday Times, and she continues to contribute recipes to various publications after retirement today. She has several cookbooks on Straits Chinese and Southeast Asian food to her credit, including Classic Asian Noodles, Classic Asian Rice and Classic Asian Salads.

Good, With Reservations

I ordered this book on the strength of the list of recipes. It has just arrived, so I am not yet able to speak to the finished products. I am somewhat let down. It isn't as well written or as interesting as I had hoped. What I can say is that you need to be very wary of the claim that it is usable by those 'new to cooking.' I would say they should have left it for 'experienced cooks.' The directions are scanty, and assume a lot of prior experience and knowledge about these various noodle types, and Asian cooking techniques. For instance, if you are not really up on the many varied types of Asian noodles, the blanket instruction to 'soak the noodles in cold water' can be confusing--not even any times given for soaking the various noodle types. And my experience tells me you really do need to know just how to handle the particular noodle you are dealing with. This is especially true if you are trying to eat gluten-free, and need to know just what the different Asian noodles are made from. The gluten-free noodles are trickier than wheat noodles to get good results.

Just telling you to blanket 'soak in cold water,' or 'cook noodles' before making soup, is not good enough, because the reality is that some require soaking in just-boiled water, some in hot, some in warm, some in cold, and some need just a brief cooking time in simmering water. Plus you need to know exact soaking and simmering times, and what to do at the end of the soaking or simmering. This same scant instruction applies to using dried mushrooms, and to the size of many things just described as 'sliced,' or 'sliced into strips,' when this is an unfamiliar ingredient, like fish cake. Or, if you've never used squid, what is the difference between 'small squid' and 'squid rings?'

The Stuffed Tau Pok recipe says to mix shredded cucumber and coarsely shredded lettuce (what kind?) with bean sprouts ('blanched" but no instructions for how long, or, as other cookbooks tell you, to immediately plunge them in ice water to keep them crisp), and to stuff 'deep fried spongy bean curd' (no instruction about exactly what this is, although there is a photo which could help you somewhat). I am immediately worried about the amount of liquid that is going to come out of the cucumbers and lettuce, especially as you are directed to stuff the bean curds with these very watery shredded vegetables, and then set aside until you grill them, and meanwhile make a dressing for them. When you do grill them, it is in a toaster oven or under a grill (broiler?), to 'crisp them,' but no instructions for how far from the heat or how long or if you are supposed to turn them over??? Even as an experienced cook, I am wary of trying this recipe.

So, it may be that you have to approach this cookbook with the idea that the first time or two you try a recipe, you are on a learning adventure, and may not like the results, but could see the possibilities down the road somewhere.

At the same time as receiving this book, I have been looking over several of Martin Yan's cookbooks checked out of my library. I find them to be excellently written in all the areas of problem in 'Asian One-dish Meals.' And, although he is not considered a classic Chinese chef, and you may find him a bit cheesy on air, I am experienced enough to see that his recipes are probably going to yield pleasing results from the outset, especially for a beginning cook in this culinary area.

Also, as far as learning about Asian noodles, I highly recommend 'Noodle' by Terry Durack and Geoff Lung (Aug 1999), which not only gives you beautifully photographed ingredients and well-written, interesting recipes, but a very clear and extensive instruction (including excellent comparison charts) on how to successfully deal with every different type of noodle, and which type to chose for which kind of dish. If you have this knowledge and have cooked at least a little from Durack's book, and from some of Yan's recipes, then you might be the 'experienced cook' referred to in 'Asian One-Dish Meals,' which does have a longer recipe list to choose from than Durack's book, but not than Yan's.

It will remain to compare the results, as I cook from each book. I think, without the careful, in-depth instruction in 'Noodles,' just diving into 'Asian One-dish Meals,' you could find yourself in the kinds of noodle messes I experienced trying to learn to use rice sticks and bean threads without instruction, coming from an Italian pasta background. Yuck! It was a long time before I even found one book with a sidebar instruction on how to soak the rice sticks, but no good info on the many other Asian noodles. Therefore, 'Noodles' is like a great treasure of knowledgeable help, if you love Asian noodles. And Yan's books can get you going quickly with confidence on the general techniques (try his 'Quick and Easy,' and his 'Asian Favorites' has you roaming outside China far and wide).
