About the Author
Gianna Cassetta is coauthor of No More Taking Away Recess and Other Problematic Discipline Practices, part of the Not This, But That series. She is the author of a professional text entitled, Literacy Centers: a Standards Based Approach for Grades 3 and Beyond, and is featured in instructional videos on effective literacy practices, including Step into Guided Reading. She is currently working on a book about the relationship between classroom management approaches and the social efficacy of students. Gianna is an experienced classroom teacher, school leader, and consultant, and has worked as Director of Leadership Development for the Office of School Reform and Innovation at Denver Public Schools. Her passion for urban education led her to steer the effort to co-found Future Leaders Institute, a charter school in Harlem, New York City, and SOAR Schools in Denver, Colorado where she currently serves as Co-Executive Director.

Brook Sawyer is coauthor of No More Taking Away Recess and Other Problematic Discipline Practices, part of the Not This, But That series. Brook was a middle school language arts teacher and an elementary guidance counselor and is now an assistant professor in the College of Education at Lehigh University. Her research aims are interdisciplinary and center on promoting the development of young children who have disabilities or who are dual language learners (DLLs). Specifically, her work aims to support the development of preschoolers who are at risk for poor school performance by examining and enhancing the practices of teachers and teachers as well as by enhancing partnerships between educators and parents. She has published her work in numerous journals, such as Early Childhood Research Quarterly, Journal of Early Intervention, and Journal of Research in Reading. She has presented her work at national and international conferences.

A concise, immensely helpful guide to effective discipline

Gianna Cassetta and Brook Sawyer have written a very practical and powerful guide to help teachers effectively manage their classrooms so that students can thrive and learn. They have packed so much information into the book's 80-odd pages. They demonstrate what current research shows about discipline practices that are and are not effective. Then, they take those findings and demonstrate at a practical level how teachers can implement the recommended practices.

I especially appreciated the book's theme of "giving" versus "taking away." Too many discipline approaches work from a punitive model (what can I take away from these kids to make them behave?), but the authors show that by spending more time thinking about what children need to succeed in a given situation or what is getting in the way of their behavior, teachers can foster positive student behavior and help students succeed. As a result, they can create calmer, happier school climates for themselves and their students.

While some might think of this approach as "pie in the sky," the authors show that it can work even in the most challenging of school settings. The classroom scenarios and students they present are realistic and ones to which teachers can relate, and the approach they outline is one that all teachers would benefit from reading.

I have already recommended this book to many teachers and will continue to do so.

Great look at classroom management

This book was great! I truly feel that every teacher should read it and reflect on his/her own ideas about classroom management. I appreciate how the authors give theory, show research, and use examples of possible class scenarios. I will be sharing this book with others at my school.

this book assumes that you know nothing of international relations and international organizations. thus, in this context it explains things in a very simple straight forward manner. in addition, pease is repetitive in her analysis of realism, liberalism, marxism and feminism. however, i find that her analysis is limited and fails to take a nuanced approach to the aforementioned theories. in short, her analysis is elementary. i really wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, especially in consideration of the price. to me, a book on international organizations should have a brief theory section, but then examine organizations and their problems in greater depth. furthermore, while reading this book, i was struck with the question of whether or not pease actually wrote this book herself, or if her grad students helped her. there appear to be distinct inconsistencies in writing style between chapters. regardless, this book is mediocre, there are plenty of better scholars.

A noble enterprise indeed, in an understudied field. Theoretical perspectives are the end all and be all of international politics, but Pease's book bites off more than it could ever dream of chewing. Critical theory (Marxist and Feminist) is grossly oversimplified, as she not only leaves the reader with a dearth of literary references to actual writers, but moreover gives these marginal perspectives half the page space that she devotes to Realists and liberals/idealists. The organization of the book, though - offering deductive as well as inductive arguments - is intriguing. The case studies make the book worth buying, though the theoretical synopses that precede them, through questionable portrayals, almost negate their practicality. It is a book without rival only because no one else has undertaken the cause. The book is worth buying, although it is a choice of which Faust himself might approve.

Recent world events demonstrate the need to understand that there are multiple world views that differ from US liberal world view. The UN and other international organizations are, simultaneously, tools of the great powers (the US), agents of imperialism and promotors of democracy, development and human rights. They also reflect masculine values and strategies. Pease strikes the right balance between the theory and practice of international organizations, although an Islamist world view would be helpful in understanding how the UN, NATO, WTO and the Arab League are perceived outside of the West. I recommend this text to anyone interested in understanding the governance of world affairs using the world views others.

To solve this issue, CAT research has looked into the leveraging of comparable corpora, i.e. a set of texts, in two or more languages, which deal with the same topic but are not translations of one another.

This work had two primary objectives. The first is to assess the input of lexicons extracted from comparable corpora in the context of a specialized human translation task. The second objective is to identify bilingual-lexicon-extraction methods which best match the translators’ needs, determining the current limits of these techniques and suggesting improvements. The author focuses, in particular, on the identification of fertile translations, the management of multiple morphological structures, and the ranking of candidate translations.

The experiments are carried out on two language pairs (English–French and English–German) and on specialized texts dealing with breast cancer. This research puts significant emphasis on applicability – methodological choices are guided by the needs of the final users. This book is organized in two parts: the first part presents the applicative and scientific context of the research, and the second part is given over to efforts to improve compositional translation.

The research work presented in this book received the PhD Thesis award 2014 from the French association for natural language processing (ATALA).

Has good questions but poor explanations.

I have waited until the end of the semester to write this review to be fair to the textbook and authors. Overall it has
mediocre explanations and examples. One of the major distractions for the text was the lack of use of adequate modern type-setting to show something as a row or column vector. They (the authors) too frequently just write the equation in a horizontal line and expect the student to know if it is a row or column vector they are referring to. When dealing with matrices and trying to derive the coefficients of the general solution this is confusing and frustrating. Many of the examples would greatly benefit from showing the complete solutions instead of the more deadly method used in too many introductory books of skipping steps to the answer. When one is initially learning the material, complete solutions, more than brief answers are critical in understanding.

Amazon sells the Linear Algebra book by Gilbert Strang (of the MIT Lecture Series of the same name) which is much more clear in its exposition and uses modern type-setting to show the exact nature of the question and the derivation to the solution. As far as the Differential Equation part of a combined course, almost any other text sold by Amazon will be better than this book.

I have asked several instructors at my college why they use this book and they freely admit to its short-comings but are resigned to the fact that they are few, very few texts, that combine both topics in the same textbook. The only reason I give the text 2 stars are the questions at the end of each chapter. They cover the material well, even though the prior explanations do not.

Excellent and comprehensive

I took Ted Sider's class at NYU, for which we used this book as the text. It is really an excellent intro to logic -- accessible without scrimping on technical details. It is also very comprehensive for a single-volume logic intro, covering many of the varieties of logic that are found in contemporary analytic philosophy.

Some caveats: firstly, this book is indeed an "intro" to some less-than-standard logics, but it is not an "intro" generally, and it really falls more squarely in the category of "intermediate" difficulty (filling a rather gaping hole in the available literature, between bare introduction and technical jungle). Readers looking for a purely beginning introduction to formal logic should look elsewhere (there is an abundance of good material at that level). Secondly, the purpose of the book is quite clearly to provide the technical equipment required for a working knowledge of certain logic-heavy areas of philosophy, and this book is not aimed particularly toward, say, mathematicians. That said, as an overview aimed at providing a solid groundwork for understanding the many flavors of logic one encounters in philosophical writing, it is probably the best book you can get, in my humble opinion. A solid second-place goes to that two-volume series by LTF Gamut, which is also quite widely available, and shares many of the same merits as this.

Too much and too little

First let me say that the writing in this book is terrifically clear. The presentation of logical material is really good and the author hits all the right notes in the philosophical asides that show up now and again. Depending on your background this book could be a worthwhile read. So why only three stars? My complaint is that this book is superfluous. Let me explain. The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to more advanced topics in logic, especially those that are of interest to philosophers. As such the book covers a tremendous amount of material including some basic metalogic for propositional and predicate logic, modal propositional logic, quantified modal logic, tense logic, deontic logic, three valued-logic, intuitionistic logic... you get the picture. And it manages all this in a rather skimpy 280 pages. As a result the coverage of each of these topics is very cursory. This means that, to my mind, any student who wants to really understand any of these topics is going to have to read some more thoroughly presented material anyway. So why not just read the thorough material in the first place, rather than this book. The flip-side of this problem is that the book is not particularly introductory. That is to say, if you can read Sider's book and understand it, you can probably read and understand many of the other logic texts out there. So, though the book is supposed to be an introduction to advanced logic, it is neither sufficiently introductory to justify its brevity, nor sufficiently detailed to justify its advanced presentation.

Covers all the major topics

We used this text for our advanced logic class, and like all logic books there is a good, a bad, and an ugly. First the good. Sider is an awesome writer; every chapter begins with a wonderfully clear exposition of each topic in philosophical logic. I was especially impressed by his chapter on counterfactuals; every student of those strange conditionals should start here rather than with Lewis or Stalnaker (move on to those guys after reading this!). The bad: like most logicians, Sider assumes the notation he is using will be intuitive to the reader--it is not. I doubt I could have grasped the subtleties of his method, which he repeats in every chapter, without the aid of a professor. The ugly: there are some egregious typos, one which comes to mind is on page 61 where he is proving a major rule of inference (he leaves off a negation sign).

The great thing about this book is that it covers all the major topics of deductive logic one finds in technical analytic philosophy, and it is helpful to survey if one needs a refresher on whatever one is studying at the moment. While I continue to believe there is no such thing as a good logic text book, I do think Sider's is worth owning as it can be referenced easily whenever one has a question about this or that aspect of first and second order logic.
