About the Author

Mark J. Price

Mark J. Price is a Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT) and Microsoft Specialist, Programming in C# and Architecting Microsoft Azure Solutions, with more than 20 years of educational and programming experience. Since 1993, Mark has passed more than 90 Microsoft programming exams and specializes in preparing others to pass them too. His students range from professionals with decades of experience to 16-year-old apprentices with no experience at all. He successfully guides all of them by combining educational skills with real-world experience, consulting on and developing systems for enterprises worldwide. Between 2001 and 2003, Mark was employed full-time to write official courseware for Microsoft in Redmond, USA. His team wrote the first training courses for C# and .NET while they were still an early alpha version. While with Microsoft, he delivered "train-the-trainer" classes to get other MCTs up to speed in C# and .NET. In 2010, Mark took a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE). He taught GCSE and A-level mathematics in two secondary schools in London. Mark holds a Computer Science BSc (Hons) degree from the University of Bristol, UK.

A Good "First Look" at .NET Core 1.0

I can't give this book 5 stars due to some minor issues. For example, some of the Visual Studio screen shots are not accurate because as Microsoft updated .NET Core 1.0 RC2, they also pushed updates for Visual Studio. This is minor and for the most part the author did a good job of annotating where code was going to change by the time .NET Core reaches RTM next month. This book didn't attempt to go nearly as deep as the Wrox publication on C# 6 and .NET Core 1.0 but that's a good thing because .NET Core has been changing too fast. As a result, the Wrox book has far more errors in it.

This book also has some cool extras like a section on the .NET Portability Analyzer (Visual Studio extension) and managing source code on GitHub. Grab this book now and hold off on buying the in-depth 1500 page reference until well after .NET Core has been officially released.

An excellent book for learning C# 6 and .NET Core 1.0

An outstanding book for learning C#, without trying to be a complete guide to every small detail as so many other programming books out there, as Mark writes in the intro:
"There are many C# books, some, more than a thousand pages long, that aim to be comprehensive references to the C# programming language and the .NET Framework. This book is different. [...] I will point out the cool corners and gotchas of C# so you can impress colleagues and employers and quickly get productive. Rather than slowing down and boring some of you by explaining every little thing, I assume that if a term I use is new to you, then you know how to Google it..."
This approach, and mindset, makes the book a much better read, without compromising the essential parts of C# that you need to learn.

The book starts from the very beginning, and will allow people with very little programming experience to pick up this book and just follow it step by step to learn C# 6. While at the same time enabling experienced C# programmers to read over the basic parts fast only stopping to get the "What's new in C# 6 and .NET Core 1.0"-parts. And enabling a relatively fast read for catching up on the direction .NET is going.

The structure, examples and small anecdotes in the book represents the fact that Mark is an excellent teacher as well as author. Having had Mark as instructor on a C# course, i can say this book represents a vast knowledge of C# and how to teach it.

No Your Ordinary Reloading Manual

I am glad that I purchased both volumes 1 and 2 years ago and kept them in good condition. Volume 1 contains information that you'll find nowhere else. The first half of the book deals with topics that other manuals don't cover such as pressure, wind drift, sectional density, killing power, etc, all examined in a very scientific way. The last half introduces you to a wide variety of wildcat cartridges that most people today have never heard of. This isn't a book you would buy as a reloading manual per se. It is more of an advanced treatise on handloading and shooting topics. If you are an avid handloader and shooter you'll love this book. Good luck finding it.

Informative and well-written

This is definitely an interesting read on the IT Infrastructure Library. I was quite interested to see how things were working with ITIL and this book explained it very patiently and in detail. I personally really like the concept. I especially like how ITIL deals with meeting goals and keeping all the planned changes in check.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in ITIL or overall IT management, as it is a worthy read.

Price is right and good beginning overview of ITIL which is what I'm sure it was intended to be. Would be helpful to someone just trying to find an appropriate framework for IT Service Management, but anyone looking for depth would need to search further.

Not much to it. It is only 68 pages. It is a good high level overview, but if you seriously want to learn ITIL I recommend getting a more substantial book.

For a brief book this title summarizes very well topics which the larger books tend to present in academically interesting ways but which tax the limited time of busy clinicians who just need quick refreshers. Likewise, this book presents relevant clinical material often missed by the pocket books. Eg., transfusion practices and the "electronic" crossmatch; current perioperative fluid strategies (restricted volume); LR for CKD patients w/ slightly elevated K, etc. Well worth the price. Ordered paper AND Kindle versions.

Good primer

This is an excellent primer for family medicine residents and medical students doing work in anesthesia. This primer is aimed at this generation of learner. Surprisingly Relevant

Shannon Jung provokes a searching awareness of our attitudes toward food, distribution ethics, and a different context for eating disorders that is surprisingly relevant for our time, in Food for Life. Though dealing with important and often sobering realities, Jung's writing is easily followed and engaging. No idealist, nor "preacher," Jung leads us through a valuable reflection of our neglect of the whole self while feeding our bodies through unconscious consumption. Highly recommend this book for insights on more intentional and interconnected living...it was not what I expected.

Food for Life is Powerful!

First, to clear up any misconception, let me be clear. Far from being a self-help book for weight loss or eating disorders, Food for Life, is theology and religious philosophy. L. Shannon Jung's book is a treatise on food and the physical and spiritual hungers that drive our interactions with God, one another and the world around us. It is a powerful commentary on the social, institutional and systemic ills that pervert our attitudes toward the food we eat and how we can begin to return to a place of moral, spiritual and physical health. Jung tempers his critiques with a pervasive joy of food and eating, and what he insists should be the celebration of God and creation. Jung is a Christian theologian and Food for Life is clearly written from that perspective, but the insights he offers are universal and, in my opinion, provide a welcome companion to important other topical works such as; Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma and Weber's Food Inc.

Duh, Read the descrition!!!

Bought on recommendation of a recent acquaintance,I might have gotten the title wrong and I didn't read the description.
This book is very christian and being that I cannot stomach any religion imagine a food book with a religious bent. This went straight into recycle bin so hopefully it's something more useful now, like toilet paper.

Having a clear understanding of the precursor behaviors could benefit us by enabling prediction and prevention of such crimes, says Dobbert. He also addresses signs of psychopathy and sexual disorders that should send red flags up to any adult or parent looking to protect their loved ones from harm.

Dobbert offers psychological and social history of each killer, from early life on, which molded each into an ultimate monster. Lucas, for example, was born to a prostitute and an alcoholic father who lost his legs in a train accident. He was forced to watch his mother perform sexual acts with clients, regularly beaten and one head injury from a beating put him into a coma. His mother curled his hair into ringlets and dressed him as a girl, sending him to school like that. Lucas showed all the signs of Conduct Disorder by the time he was 10 and already an alcoholic. He was obsessed with sex by the time he was 13, and had sex with his half-brother, as well as animals he would trap, torture and kill in sexual rituals. Lucas was convicted as a teenager of a burglary, and sent to a training school, where he was disruptive and attempted several escapes, but released a year later. He confessed later to raping his 12-year-old niece the next day. Each of these killers have a unique psychological development, but all demonstrated early the patterned behavior of psychopathy and sexual disorder, explains Dobbert.

About the Author

Duane Dobbert is series editor for the Praeger series in Forensic Psychology, a full professor of criminal forensic studies at Florida Gulf Coast University, a fellow of the American College of Forensic Examiners, and a diplomat of the American Board of Psychological Specialties. He has been a forensic behavioral analyst for 39 years and has served as consultant for law enforcement departments throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. His published works include Forensic Psychology and Praeger'sHalting the Sexual Predators Among Us and Understanding Personality Disorders.

Very Disappointing!

As a researcher of serial murder, I found this book disappointing. This is a fairly short work. The author first quotes at length from the DSM IV (psychiatry manual for diagnosing psychological disorders) to offer a psychological foundation for serial murder, and then follows this with very short biographical chapters (on average two pages) on a number of famous killers to illustrate the DSM IV diagnoses. The psychological evaluations were short and thin -- sometimes only a paragraph. The author never shares any personal experience in working with psychopaths or murderers, so it appears to be an academic exercise.

The author lumps many types of killers into one category -- Lust Killers -- which is a criminology definition of a type of serial killer within the category of "Hedonistic Killers" -- not a DSM IV definition. Many so-called Lust Killers are also in the category of Power and Control Killers, and some of them are Visionary Killers (usually schizophrenics), but there is no discussion about this or acknowledgment that an individual serial killer can be classified into several categories -- and the biographies presented are of people who fit into more than one category. The fields of psychology and criminology have not yet established a mutually-accepted set of definitions or understanding of serial murderers -- something most certainly needed. This is a complex subject that deserves much more attention and research than given in this book. I found it to be over-simplified and boring to read.

About the Author

Dr. Bricker served as Director of the Early Intervention Program at the Center on Human Development, University of Oregon, from 1978 to 2004. She was a professor of special education, focusing on the fields of early intervention and social-communication.

Her professional interests have addressed three major areas: early intervention service delivery approaches, curricula-based assessment and evaluation, and developmental-behavioral screening. Dr. Bricker's work in early intervention approaches has been summarized in two volumes: An Activity-Based Approach to Early Intervention, Fourth Edition (with J. Johnson & N. Rahn; Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co., 2015) and An Activity-Based Approach to Developing Young Children’s Social Emotional Competence (with J. Squires; Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co., 2007). Her work in curricula-based assessment/evaluation has focused on the development of the Assessment, Evaluation, and Programming System for Infants and Children, Second Edition (AEPS®; with B. Capt, K. Pretti- Frontczak, J. Johnson, K. Slentz, E. Straka, & M Waddell; Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co., 2004). This measure and curricula provides intervention personnel with a system for the comprehensive assessment of young children with results that link directly to curricular content and subsequent evaluation of child progress.

Dr. Bricker has been a primary author of the Ages & Stages Questionnaires® (ASQ; with J. Squires; Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co., 1995, 1999, 2009) and directed research activities on the ASQ system starting in 1980. Developmental Screening in Your Community: An Integrated Approach for Connecting Children with Services (Bricker, Macy, Squires, & Marks; Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co., 2013) offers a comprehensive system for creating and operating community-wide developmental-behavioral screening programs for young children.

Dr. Bricker's distinctions include the Division of Early Childhood, Council for Exceptional Children Service to the Field Award, December 1992, and the Peabody College Distinguished Alumna Award, May 1995.

Betty Capt, Ph.D., OTR, helped develop the second edition of the AEPS as a Research Associate in the Early Intervention Program at the University of Oregon. She taught graduate-level coursework in early intervention and provided professional development seminars and workshops nationwide on best practices in assessment and intervention. She also worked as an occupational therapist and has provided services in early intervention for more than 30 years.

JoAnn (JJ) Johnson, Ph.D., is associate professor in the Child and Family Studies Department in the School of Education at Saint Cloud State University in Minnesota. Previously, she worked at University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities in Louisiana, Oregon, and Nevada, serving as a center-based coordinator and teacher for young children ages 2–5, as a Graduate Teaching Fellow and home services coordinator, and as an adjunct faculty member, grant and contract director, project administrator, and service provider. She was also Director of the Research and Educational Planning Center and the Nevada University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities from 2001 to 2008.

Her professional experiences in disabilities services and studies include hospital-, home-, and center-based early intervention and developmental services; developmental assessment and evaluation; supervision and program coordination; and university and outreach training and instruction. Since the 1990s, Dr. Johnson has worked with both federal and numerous state departments of education and provided workshops and training throughout the United States and internationally on the use of the AEPS and activity-based intervention for families and professionals. In her spare time, Dr. Johnson likes to read, work on home projects, and observe young children’s development.

As the president of B2K Solutions, Ltd., Dr. Pretti-Frontczak extends her expertise in the preparation of personnel to a global market with the aim of improving the implementation of effective practices and services by those who work with young children with diverse abilities. She is a gifted speaker, strong applied researcher, and is known for creating solutions to complex problems. She has presented to diverse audiences in countries such as Singapore and Australia as well as to early education providers in virtually every state in the US. Dr. Pretti-Frontczak is a Past President of the Division for Early Childhood, was a professor at Kent State University for 16 years, and has worked as an early childhood consultant and trainer since 1990.

Kristine Slentz, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Special Education at Western Washington University and works as a training and technical assistance consultant for Early Support for Infants and Toddlers (ESIT), the Part C program in Washington State. Her particular areas of interest and expertise are assessment and evaluation, early intervention, risk and resiliency, and working within family contexts across cultures. She has been fortunate to combine her love of travel with international training opportunities in Canada, Dubai, Singapore, and Kenya.

Elizabeth Straka, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, provides training and technical assistance to agencies that provide services to young children with disabilities and their families. She also provides training seminars nationally in regard to recommended practice in assessment and intervention with young children and their families, with an emphasis on team collaboration. Dr. Straka continues to practice as a therapist, focusing on the assessment and treatment of developmental disorders in young children.

Misti Waddell, M.S., is a senior research assistant/project coordinator at the Early Intervention Program at the University of Oregon. She has contributed to the development and research of the Assessment, Evaluation, and Programming System for Infants and Children (AEPS®), Second Edition, since the early 1990s. She has used the AEPS in classroom settings and has coordinated several federally funded, field-initiated research projects and outreach training projects.

I sent this order back twice. It should have been a set of 10 booklets, but there was only 1. I returned my first order thinking it was a mistake, but the second order was the same. I do not recommend buying this booklet here.
