Incredibly informative!

I was always curious as to how to make surf forecasts, and with this book it was simple. The author goes into enough detail so that you know the variables involved, but doesn't get into boring details that can seem overwhelming. Instead, there are some simple calculations and explanations that make it easy for anyone to learn how to create their own surf forecasts, and learn how to estimate wind among other things. I found the book easy to read, informative, and well structured.

Simple, and accurate

I've been reading the WetSand WaveCast reports for years, back when Nathan Cool first started WaveCast. I knew some of the basics of forecasting, but never realized it could be done so easily. This book shows how forecasting surf for any location can be done with some simple calculations and models you can get for free on the web. I'd give this book ten toes over the nose. Definitely worth every penny.

Simple, useful tool

This is a simple to read book that has enough information to get the job done. Very quick to go through and create surf forecasts using free data, such as models that you can access on the web. Formulas are simplified, and accurate enough to gauge incoming swells, size, arrival times, etc. Graphics are a bit grainy, and URLs are a bit outdated (book was published in 2004). Overall though, a good tool for the price.

Dr. Subhash Jain is Professor of Marketing in the School of Busines Administration at University of Connecticut. Dr. Jain received his Masters of Business Administration and Ph.D. from the University of Oregon, and undergraduate work at University of Rajasthan, India and Standford Univerisity. He specializes in Global Marketing and Market Planning and Strategy. Currently Dr. Jain is Executive Director for International Business Programs, University of Connecticut; he is a member of American Marketing Association, Academy of Marketing Science and Academy of International Business, Planning Forum. Dr. Jain is a consultant to corporations including NCR, Heinkein, Mead, and UTC and Inernational Institutions such as GATT and World Bank. He has authored seven books, about one hundred papers and is listed in Who's Who in Consulting; Men of Achievement and International Scholars Directory; American Men and Women of Science.

A Failure of Marketing Theory Application

Jain/Haley's Marketing: Planning and Strategy is by far one of the most convoluted, under-cooked, and poorly written marketing textbooks I have ever read. As a Graduate student of both marketing and entrepreneurship, I've had a good amount of experience with different texts, and have been extremely disappointed with this excuse for a strategy textbook.

After reading the first two chapters (as well as the second case study), I was astounded to see a number of grammatical and spelling errors, not to mention poorly constructed paragraphs that frequently mixed tenses to the point that I had to re-read entire sections. Barring technical issues, the text also employs poor examples of the concepts it attempts to apply. For instance, on page 63:

"In 2008, McDonald's decided to directly compete with Starbucks by adding coffee bars with "baristas" in almost 14,000 of its U.S. restaurants, serving cappuccinos, lattes, mochas, and the Frappe. Right away Starbucks planned offensive measures to prevent McDonald's encroachment on what it considered its territory."

And that is all we get. No mention of the actual strategy employed. Just an unsupported claim lacking any educational relevance whatsoever.

If I didn't have to read this text to pass tests, I wouldn't. Sadly, I have to struggle through the mess that is Marketing: Planning and Strategy. Avoid this text at all costs. Professors - please save your students the misery. Horrible job on this text; is this really an eighth edition? I would hate to see the first.

AVOID!! Is there any Planning or Strategy for this Book?

I have this book as well (8th ed) - I completely agree with this review. As a marketing and real estate graduate student with marketing and psychology degrees, this is absolutely the worst excuse for a textbook and I am actually rather angry I had to waste so much money on this book. I also am required to read the book for exams, but I have been trying hard to avoid reading anything in it - the case studies are so poorly written it is distracting.

A 2-3 page case study should not take an hour or 2 to read, but it does when it must be read repetitively to make sense of it. They also have a tendency to just stop - as though they were just telling a story and then they are done - no points made, no questions asked - just a history of a company or companies and that's it.

I couldn't have said it better myself KC Student - everyone should avoid this horrible textbook at all costs!! Professors: forcing students to read this book is like cruel and unusual punishment.. not to mention downright mean.

Great for anyone in, starting, or thinking about nursing school!

I have been out of nursing school for around four years now but the memory of how intimidating and confusing it is when you start is still fresh in my mind. The Nursing School Thrive Guide is something I wish I had when I was starting out. The information in this easy to read guide is invaluable and incredibly accurate! Organization and the ability to plan ahead are must have skills to be successful in school and this guide will tell you what you need to know. I have recommended this book to quite a few people starting nursing school and it will helpful to anyone that has already started as well.

I'm so glad I heard about Maureen's E-Book

I have looked into a number of books that I could read that would help ease my anxiety and prepare me before class started. I'm so glad I heard about Maureen's E-Book. It is a well written, information packed page turner. It has great personal advise and step by step guided schedules. Maureen addresses the different styles of learning and how to incorporate each one into studying. She also provides great resources to help. After reading her book I can't wait to start classes. I know I have a good foundation of what to expect and how to start my studies. Over all an easy read that is very helpful. She also has a blog and Facebook page(Straight A Nursing Student). I will be recommending this E-Book and Maureen's blog to classmate this year. :)

Required reading about the Pacific War, the nature of Japan, being human

The other reviewers have eloquently stated the case. This is a book you will read and re-read throughout your life. It is first and foremost an incredible eyewitness account of the Pacific War by a ship captain who was intimately involved in many of the key small battles of the war (the major battles were settled by air power, not his area). It is one of the best written war accounts to come out of any nation.

Secondly, it provides an unique insight into the Japanese at the time that has relevance over the entire 19th and 20th centuries, explaining such things as the origin of the Japanese navy in imitation of the American and British navies...which can easily be taken as a model for the industrial imitation leading up to Japanese economic superpower status by the 1980s.

Finally, Hara is a great autobiographist who shares his heart, displays his heroism and intellect, but does not fail to describe his weaknesses. Whenever there is a conflict, war or political or business or social, it is good to remember the other side is human too.

In this book (the correct title is JAPANESE DESTROYER CAPTAIN), Captain Hara (not Harra) discusses how he commanded a Japanese destroyer in all of the major Pacific sea conflicts: Empress Augusta Bay, Coral Sea, the invasion of the Philippines, Guadalcanal, Savo Island, and Midway. While on a re-supply mission through Blackett Straight in August 1943, upon noticing a fire-ball explosion near the destroyer "Amagiri" in front of his destroyer "Shigure", he ordered for his ship's crew to shoot at Lt. J.F. Kennedy's sinking PT-109. He provides a most harrowing description -- as commander of cruiser Yahagi -- how he barely survied its sinking alongside the ill-fated battleship Yamato on their suicide mission to attack the U.S. forces invaiding Okinawa. He details his training of the pilots of suicide motorboats (Shinyo: "ocean shaker") that were designed to ram Allied warships approaching Japan. After I wrote to him, he sent me an autographed photograph of himself in 1968 -- a fine keepsake from one of the luckiest Japanese destroyer commanders to have survived so many desperately fought WWII sea battles. His 312-page book was published by Ballantine Books, initially in 1961.

A thorough introduction

Mr Koster — a New Yorker — is (like myself) a former pupil of Mario Escudero, and since 1965 has had a lengthy career of concerts, broadcasts and teaching in the United States, Spain and Japan.

The present work, along with Volumes 2 & 3, was previously published by AIG Music. The author has taught from it for several years, but in this form it is now out of print. With its republication by Mel Bay, Mr Koster has (he tells me) taken the opportunity of correcting various misprints, revising the text (including the restoration of some passages deleted by the previous publishers), and adding fingerings and fingerboard diagrams. (The last-named are especially helpful in showing when particular chord-shapes should be held.)

PREREQUISITES

Like many other Flamenco guitar methods, this one assumes a basic grounding in finger-style guitar (of the order of one to two years' playing). All the examples are presented in staff-notation and tablature; I suppose one could in theory manage by copying the timing from the accompanying CD, but the ability to read would be a definite plus.

CONTENT

After enthusiastic forewords from Pepe Romero and Eliot Fisk come explanations of the notation, plus notes on the guitar, playing position, fingernails and the cejilla (capo). The tutor proper then explains compás and rasgueado, and passes from easy strumming patterns in the forms farruca, soleares, alegrías and tangos, to rasgueado versions of the same.

We then move to simple thumb and arpeggio falsetas, along with explanations of the different sections of a flamenco composition (llamada, escobilla, etc.). Other rhythms covered include verdiales, rosas, siguiriyas and bulerías, with examples drawn from the simpler falsetas of Sabicas, Mario, Ricardo, Diego del Gastor and Lucía. Further techniques described include the golpe (tap) and alzapúa (strumming with the thumb).

Towards the end there are some intelligent notes on the vexed question of how best to notate bulerías (to start on beat 1 or on beat 12, that is the question).

The accompanying CD is properly treated as a didactic aid rather than as a recital. The playing is clean and accurate, at appropriate speeds (both slow and fast), and with interpolated comments as required.

But above all, simple though they are, the examples all sound like real Flamenco.

PRESENTATION

The most obvious improvement over the old edition is the nice photo of the author on the cover of the new one. But the thing that impressed me most was the exhaustive thoroughness of the fingerings, for both right and left hands — nothing has been left to chance. In addition, the compás count is indicated for most of the pieces.

The old version was, however, spiral bound to open flat, which the new one is not. Still, I was able to flatten it with a minimum of brute force.

SUMMARY

If most of the above terms are gibberish to you — as they may well be, if you're a beginner to Flamenco and thus in the market for this book — don't worry. This is an excellent introduction to the flamenco guitar. I particularly like the fact that the aims of the book — and with them its size and cost — have been kept modest, while still establishing a firm and thorough foundation to be built on in the subsequent volumes.

If you're a teacher of classical guitar then, and your students express an interest in learning the basics of Flamenco, this would be a fine starting point.

An Excellent Flamenco guitar for beginners!

This is an ideal flamenco guitar book for beginners trying to learn flamenco guitar. Be forewarned however that at least some basic guitar experience is required before diving into this book. The book contains clear explanations and diagrams. A variety of falsetas and complete solos for several toques including the soleares, alegrias, farruca, bulerias and seguiriyas are covered. The book strongly emphasizes the compas. It introduces the rasgeados technique along with the compas for these toques first and then moves onto falsetas and other techniques...Overall it is highly recommended and expect to spend at least a year or so to cover all of the material in it(assuming you practice for an hour or so everyday).

My Flamenco Curriculum with Maria Zemantuaski

I am a student of Maria Zemantauski's Under the Lemon Tree and she studied under Mr. Koster and uses this book as part of our curriculum. It is challenging and builds using very popular Flamenco songs and compas and growing them in complexity over the chapters. Mr. Koster introduces the quintuplet rasgueado early on in the book and builds all the former pieces using this method.

The book is accompanied by a CD that plays through each piece and then plays the first line at half speed. I use a guitar trainer Tascam CDGT2 Portable CD Guitar Trainer to listen to and slow down the CD to speeds I can use to catch all the special innuendos and dissonant chords (which my ear is just getting used to).

This book is a great curriculum and would be good for self-study or use with a Flamenco guitar instructor.

Maria did tell me that she thought that some of the techniques that Dennis presents towards the beginning (a Tangos with quintuplet rasqueados) is a little more advanced for placement towards the beginning of the book. But the book is really great and I am definitely having fun with it.
