Tons of Info for a Little Price

Little man wanted this book from BAM! but it was over $20.I purchased this for him and he loves it. It has all of the DC super heroes along with a few characters I have not heard of but he and hubby seemed to know. It even came with a little lego guy. The best part is it tells you all about each character and even gives a lot of hints and facts about each one. I had no idea there were so many DC characters. If your kid is like mine and loves to read and loves the LEGO series games and movies then get him this book. Not only are you saving money but you look like a superhero because you bought them exactly what they wanted even if they didn't know they wanted this book. Trust me they want this book!

Great figure, good book!

If you have the other books for the other Lego lines ( like I do ), you'll know what to expect. A lot great pics, good information and a really nice Batman mini figure from the direct to dvd movie. Nothing really new to the formula though.

Love it if you like DC comic heros and Legos

This Lego DC Comics Super Heroes Character book is like the bible for the Super heroes. After playing with the lego dimension games, my kids are SO addicted with different characters and some of them were DC comic super heroes. In addition, they are super hilarious on some of the scene both in the games and in their movies so of course when they saw the arrival of this book, they opened it immediately and took batman out an assembled it. In addition, they sat down for a good hour reading and flipping through the pages. 5 stars for us :9) and we recommend it for any Lego DC comics fans.

Fourteen-year-old Jake Lansa, a half-Italian, half-Hopi boy who lives in New York City with his mother and stepfather, both anthropology professors, corresponds with his father, an idealistic field biologist studying elephants in Kenya. After his mother is run over by a car while jogging, Jake decides Kenya is a better bet than being shipped off to his relatives in Nebraska. One hitch is that his father is unreachable somewhere out in the bush. After surviving a mugging in Nairobi, Jake bicycles his way west, right past lions and warthogs. He befriends a well-educated Masai and together, their mission somehow linked by Jake's grandfather's kachina, they bring rain to the drought-stricken country, drive out ruthless poachers, and, of course, find Dr. Lansa. Survival tips, like learning how to stalk animals by seeing through their eyes, are engrossing, and the butchery of the elephants by the poachers is sobering. The conservation message isn't too ponderous, but other aspects of the story are preachy, and the "voice-overs"-prophetic words uttered by Jake's father and grandfather-are repetitive and soon grate. The "you're here for a reason" theme is disappointing in the otherwise real and appealing My Side of the Mountain-like teenage-survival story.

While crossing the Kenyan bush, Jacob meets Supeet, a young Masai on a quest to end the drought, and the two join forces. On their trek they encounter a dangerous ring of poachers, whose greed threatens Africa's wildlife with extinction. Although the novel is longer than most for this age group, the action never flags, and Smith's focus on local color and vivid attention to detail will make readers feel they are participants in Jacob's experiences. Reminiscent of Gary Paulsen's survival novels, this will appeal to adventure buffs. Eric Campbell's A Place of Lions (1991) provides a related look at east equatorial Africa. Kay Weisman

Dereks Book Review for Thunder Cave

This story is the best yet of Roland Smith. If you like any of his other books this one you will love. It has the same theme of his Crypid hunter book at the begging of it. Anyway the story starts out in Nww York CIty. Jacob comes home from a regular day of school. He thens gets a message that his mom has been hit by a car. She ends up dying in intensive care. They have a funeral for her in a small chapel. Jacob try to get of Robet Lansa, known as Dr. Lansa, also Jacobs dad. He cant get a hold of him. His dad is a field bioligist in Kenya. Sam has got a new job and has decided that Jacob has to move with his aunt and uncle. Jacob dosent does like that and decides to move with Kenya with his dad. His dad dosent even know that. Jacob gathers his supplies and goes to talk to Taw, his uncle. Taw gives Jacob some avise and an amulet. When he gets to Kenya and goes through customs he finds out he can t keep his food. He hes is going into Kenya with no food while theres a drought. So he leaves the the airport and gets a hotel. The next day he goes and gets some food. Someone steals his bike and he follows them and gets beaten up and his food gets stolen. He goes to the hotel and gets a good nights rest. The next day he goes and finds his bike and steals it back. The next day he heads into Kenya. He faces many problems along the plain, like meating a lion face to face and facing dehydration. After almost dying of dehydration he meats a man named Supeet. He learns a lot from Supeet. They then learn how to perform a rain ceromony. They then peform it in Thunder Cave. Jacob gets captured by poachers.

This is the best book ive ever read!!!

Hard to suspend disbelief

Jacob's parents are divorced and he hasn't seen his dad for a couple of years, since his mom remarried. His dad writes often, though, from his research camp in Kenya where he studies elephant behavior. Jacob's life was pretty predictable until the day his mom was hit by a car. She died that night. Jacob's stepdad was offered a job in Honduras, and he doesn't want to be responsible for Jacob, so he plans to send him away -- not to his dad, but to relatives Jacob barely knows.

Jacob's opportunity to change his living arrangements comes the next day when his stepdad leaves for a business meeting out of town. Jacob already has a passport. He withdraws all his money from his bank (will a bank allow a kid to withdraw hundreds of dollars?) and pawns his mother's diamond rings. (Will a pawnshop transact business with a minor?) With the money, he buys a plane ticket to Nairobi that leaves in two days. (Will a travel agent sell a ticket to a third world country to an unaccompanied minor?) Then Jacob goes to the Kenyan Embassy and convinces them to give him a visa immediately. (Hmmm. This one is the hardest to believe. Visas take time and political pull. No one can walk in to the embassy and walk out with a visa. You have to apply, and then wait, sometimes as much as 6 months.) Since he will be biking across Kenya, Jacob packs his camping gear, and has the airline load his bike with the luggage.

Jacob was in Nairobi less than a day when his bike was stolen and he was beaten up. From this point on, the story is an exciting "My Side of the Mountain" adventure, with interesting face-to-face meetings with wild animals and even ivory poachers. There is drought and danger at every turn as Jacob pushes into the wild, parched country to find his father.

I understand that the author had to figure out a way to get the boy into Africa unaccompanied, but it was difficult for me to believe that it could have happened this way. On the other hand, children are less informed about the ins and outs of international travel, and will probably go right along with the possibilities here.

Boys in 4th to 8th grade who like danger and adventure will love this book.

Darn it, it is slipping into yuck

I have read through 5 Frostborn books as of this review. This was the most predictable of the bunch. So, in addition to the grammar errors of this series the plot I think is the weakest of books 1-5. I will still continue to read the series, I will still have to re-read entire paragraphs because clarity is not his strong suit, and hope that things improve.

Needs an editor.

Good story with the same failing as the Omnibus set I read earlier: no editing. Extra words, missing words, and incorrect words abound. Multiple errors on almost every page. Someone PLEASE get this author an editor!

Worth a read

This is the fourth book of a fifteen book series. If you're like me, you enjoy a long series more than a stand-alone novel or trilogy - IF it's well-written and original. This one is quite different; it's not often readers have an opportunity to discover interesting new worlds and entirely unique races, and there are many creative, unheard-of races in this series. I'd highly recommend the Frostborn series to fans of the various Forgotten Realms sagas or any other fantasy series.

Problems:

1 - Lack of editing. We've all been there. You're losing yourself in a great story, forgetting about reality for a little while, then BAM! There's a typo, extra word, or missing word to ruin the flow, and as you do an involuntary double take the real world comes crashing back. I've definitely seen much worse, but the number of errors throughout this series is still a shame. If the author would just read over it once, or send it to a beta reader before publishing, his readers would have a much more enjoyable experience.

2 - Repetition. Summarizing each main character's back story in every novel seems unnecessary; people aren't going to start from book ten and go backwards. Also, having characters explain a situation, then restate it multiple times is annoying.

3 - As others have pointed out, the hero Ridmark Arban is overused. There's a whole group of colorful main characters here, but no matter how chaotic the fighting may become, it's usually Ridmark who strikes down a major enemy or accomplishes something significant.

PRAISE:

1 - Originality! I'm 35 years old and have been an avid reader all my life, but I've never heard of at least half the races he introduces in this series. Bravo, Moeller! Even the races we've seen before are so different in this story, they easily hold the reader's attention.

2 - Character development. As the Frostborn series progresses, so do many characters' personalities. Moeller allows readers access to their inner thoughts, feelings, and struggles so we can watch them grow. Though the repetition can be frustrating at times, I still appreciate those details and glimpses.

3 - Length of series. Some reviewers have said the series is dragging on too much. Personally, I enjoy the stalling and side adventures. When I find a good series, I always hate reaching the end. Moeller keeps his characters busy with unique, entertaining dilemmas and journeys. I applaud his expertise in stretching things out while keeping his readers interested.

Living simply on the land

This amazing novel will touch you in the deepest places. It is the story of a man, his dog, his canoe, and his life. He has suffered loss. He lives quietly in the deep woods of Arkansas. He remembered seeing Ivory Billed woodpeckers when he was a boy. Long gone now, like so many things in the woods. The panthers are long gone. They say the Ivory Bills are extinct.

Then he hears one. He thinks. Then he sees it. Should he tell others? That presents a quandary. I won't say more about the plot except for this; Gallant has taken a bold step here. The Ivory Bill is a character in the book. We know what it is experiencing, thinking, and fearing.

This book is magical. A gift to the earth and to those of us who care for it.

Woodpecker as metaphor

The bones of The Lord God Bird are powerful, evocative themes, including friendship, sense of loss, and the changing world. It is undeniably fresh is several ways, not least of which is that the tale is told partly by a protagonist known only as "the man" and partly from the POV of a majestic bird. The author has taken great care to reveal his world in a spare, authentic voice. When I am engaged in a book, I underline passages and write notes in the margin. The more I write, the better the book. The Lord Good Bird nearly exhausted my pen.

Surprisingly pure. Innocently moving. Improbably convincing. And ultimately beautiful. Wise. Wistful. Wonderful.
I walked my woods a few years back, and saw a pileated woodpecker. Not an endangered bird, but my thoughts were summed up in a single word..privileged.

Patricia takes the would be painter through her approach to painting flowers in oils and shows how approachable this subject matter is.
I love the paintings and the easy painterly approach that informs her style.
Every thing is there from choice of color to canvas, to application and so forth.
