About the Author
Having lived more than two decades in India, Swami Achuthananda lives and breathes the culture. He is an exponent of Indian Classical (Carnatic) music and a former student of K.J. A born Hindu, Swami loves India passionately but lives outside of it, devours fries and burgers as much as curry and spices, and appreciates Indian classical music as well as western songs.
When Swami is not discussing Hinduism, he's seen talking about India's other greatest religion - cricket.

Clearly and effectively sets the record straight concerning inaccurate information concerning Hinduism

There may not be the same curiosity for Westerners concerning Hinduism compared to such religions as Christianity or Islam, nonetheless, as Swami Achuthananda points out in his Many Many Many Gods of Hinduism, “its sacred literature is vast and represents thousands of years of accumulated spiritual experiences.” Unfortunately, it is a religion that has remained largely ignored, misunderstood and forgotten as many have found it to be mystical and perplexing, for it does not have a founder or an authoritative scripture, such as the Bible or the Koran.
In the form of short essays, Swami Achuthananda with his intimate knowledge of Hinduism, clearly and effectively sets the record straight concerning inaccurate information prevalent today pertaining to Hinduism and the way it is portrayed. As mentioned on the back cover of the book, “he singles out the gray-haired academics for perpetuating centuries-old myths and letting the secrets stay in the dark for so long.”
This useful and concise primer is divided into three main sections, Culture, Concepts and Controversies and is subdivided into sixty-four topics where the author cogently explores key aspects concerning the oldest of the major religions. Did you know that Hinduism has approximately one billion adherents and is the third largest religion in the world containing an enormous collection of traditions, beliefs, and practices? Its roots can be found in the Indian subcontinent and the cultures of the Indus Valley and Indo-European people.
And if we accept with an open mind Swami's invitation to begin a journey of the discovery of Hinduism in the company of one who has made the subject his life's devotion, we are assured that we will meet people not with a handshake but rather a Namaste, the traditional Indian greeting. Our thoughts concerning Yoga as a fitness regime will be altered for it will now mean the integration of the body, mind, and soul with God. And as for our perception of nature, it will take on a different meaning due to the fact that every tree, river, and mountain is revered in Hinduism and occupies a distinct place in the world. We will also have a better understanding of such sacred symbols as the Banyan tree which is more than a tree but rather the true embodiment of the religion. We will appreciate that the “many, many, many multi-limbed gods were all manifestations of the one, all prevailing Brahman,” which is one of the essential principles of Hinduism and although the religion may appear to be primitive, idolatrous, and polytheistic, its key principle is that it is a “henotheistic” religion which means the worshiping of one supreme God without denying the existence of others. Hinduism is “panentheism” in nature which means God is both immanent (within) and transcendent (beyond) as God is not only residing within all things, but beyond our conception of the world.
Despite the complexity of the subject matter, Many Many Many Gods of Hinduism is easily understood and should be essential reading for anyone seeking a better understanding of Hinduism. The author has used exactly the right mix of scholarship and unsophisticated prose to blow the lid off some of the most misconceived impressions of Hinduism. In addition, sprinkling the text with anecdotes and quotes from some well-known authors as Mark Twain gives the book a more popular tone than some others primers concerning the same topic.

A Thorough Primer for Hinduism in Religious Non-Fiction

What if our thoughts about Hinduism were all wrong? If you've grown up in the Western culture, your ideas on India and Hinduism may be skewed. Too often, the reason lies in the fact that what we've heard or read comes from an outsider's perspective of this eastern religion.
Many Many Many Gods of Hinduism by Swami Achuthananda is a book that attempts to set the record straight from a first party authority on the religion itself. From the ancient roots of Indian history, through the vast diversity of Indian culture, to a proper understanding of Ganesha and beyond, this book is a thorough journey into the insights, perspectives, and concepts of Hinduism. At 221 pages, author Swami Achuthananda lays out a roadmap for understanding Hinduism in three distinct parts.
The main character of this book is Hinduism itself with a supporting cast of quotes and endnotes that stretches as far and wide as the religion itself. Author Swami Achuthananda first lays down the foundation in culture, presenting the history, people and perspectives of southern Asia, and India in particular. Next, he builds the framework of Hinduism through its concepts and ideologies. Finally, he presents the controversies surrounding or associated with Hinduism.
In his efforts to present a clear understanding of the religion he loves and practices, the author uses some comparative religion. To critique his views of other religions, like Protestant Christianity say, would be to miss the point. What the swami offers is his perspective of western religions in comparison to Hinduism so that we might understand more clearly where the devout believer of Hinduism is coming from.
If read too quickly, especially by those of more occidental thought, some of the author's comments might appear a bit scathing or even hurled in frustration over the westerner's lack of understanding; this could not be, however, as it would be contradictory to the Hinduism he presents in the book. The quips are delivered, not to injure, but to enlighten and provoke thought -- much like the silence of the Buddha, who finally speaks to the incessant inquiry of the ill-informed.
The author's solid command of the English language and his first hand knowledge and authority in eastern thought and culture provides an excellent bridge for the reader to understand Hinduism.
If you're interested in understanding Hinduism at all, this is an excellent primer and I highly recommend you read it and research the endnotes provided.

Fascinating - a great read for anyone.

I think the one word that can fully describe this book is "beautiful." Firstly, the cover is stunning, which made me instantly excited to begin reading the book. Inside, the formatting and layout of the book are stylish yet simple - fits the tone of the book very well. And the writing - the writing is absolutely beautiful. "Many Many Many Gods of Hinduism" is filled with descriptive and creative word choices, which I think is a fair indicator of a good book in the spirituality and religion genre.
Short fables, stories, inspirational quotes, and personal accounts are intermixed with lessons on history, linguistics, political science, and theology. This book is not just about Hinduism itself, but also about how it developed and evolved, was shaped and molded, as it interacted with other civilizations, languages, cultures, and religions - and it continues to evolve today. As a student of political science, I enjoyed this greatly. As an agnostic who has dabbled with religious studies and theology, I was fascinated. As someone who knew nothing about Hinduism, this was mesmerizing and informative. I now have a new-found appreciation for the religion, and it is rare that such a short book can inspire one to gain a new understanding of something that has been around for centuries.
Humor is interspersed throughout (Would you expect a Neil Armstrong reference in a book on Hinduism? I didn't, but it's there!) - but the humor is light and not heavy handed, and it helps to maintain some air of levity and openness to an often serious and weighty topic. I very much enjoyed the fact that the chapters were all short, and the writing style was relatively terse and straightforward - there was no overly complex, ultra-academic writing here, which is often a big issue for me with non-fiction books.
I'm a fairly critical reader - and perhaps unfairly so for books in genres I don't normally read. But honestly, I found very little to criticize about this book, which is a very rare thing for me. A minor thing was that at times, I felt like I didn't have full control of my reading; I never had a concrete sense of where the book was going, or a sense that I was progressing from point A to point B in an organized manner. But I think this is also a testament to the author's ability to seamlessly take readers through each chapter, stopping for a little history here, a little lesson on scriptures there, and essentially wandering the realms of Hinduism. Overall, highly recommended!
