AC Bextor blew me away!!!!

Max Taylor.....sigh!!!. This final book in the Vengence Duet is a roller coaster ride like no other. I found myself not able to put it down. Emma's niece Casey is living in hell and her one bright spot is Max. As Max works his way deeper into Satan's Creed MC his only goal is to get Casey out and destroy Creed. With an explosive conclusion that had my jaw dropping with revelation after revelation I have to say this book is definitely one of my top 5 reads of the year.

One helluva story! AC does it again...

First of all....5 stars! No doubt that this book deserves them. We pick up in Truth where Dirty left off. Max has his nose in the ins and outs of the Creed MC. Hanger (VP of Creed MC) is still spewing crazy. Viktor the Russian has ties with Creed. Ties of business and ties to the past. Viktor trust Max enough to want Max to work for him. By Max agreeing to work for Viktor, he is promised to be given the information he needs to find his sister's (Marie) murderer. The plans for the rescue of Casey are set. Max is unaware of what exactly the plans Aimes and Low have in mind. But be sure "they are gonna blow some sh.. up". While Max waits for Aimes and Low to give him the heads up we read on and get more involved with the characters. Cilas remains quiet, but ever the strong presence at the Creed compound. Looking after Viktor's girls (the one's he plans on selling or as he likes to justify it...saving). Cilas is especially protective of Casey and Anna. Anna is special to Viktor and has been with him for a long time. But no matter what Viktor feels for Anna, she is his property. The story builds itself with suspense. AC titling this book Truth is just that, Truth. We find answers to the questions that we are given in Dirty. As we get the truth we are feeling many things. Some of the truths were very painful to learn. Other truths had me smiling to myself and saying, "I thought so." Even had me shedding a few tears at times. I want to comment also on my take on how AC Bextor handled this book and her audience. I hope I am not alone in this acknowledgment. She gave her readers more than just the cookie cutter MC program. Alpha guy, MC, girl, sexual tension, misunderstanding, sex, sex, sex. She chanced that her followers wanted more out of her MC story. She gave it a sensitive and dark subject. She handled it well. She gave us characters that were more than just filler for the pages. They had reasons for being in the story. Em and Max spent a lot of this book apart. And still I didn't feel like their relationship suffered in the story. Many of the characters in this book are interesting enough to have a story of their own. These are developed characters. Says a lot about AC's writing.

If you have read the first book in this duet series, then this installment is a must read. I loved this duet series. As I have said before, this author is a hit or miss for me.....This duet series? A home run! The writing, characters, plot, and dialogue are all amazing while also containing a wonderful and heartfelt closure to the series. If this author continues in this vein of thought and writing....I will be one happy reader. One complaint. I always have one. I would have liked, in the epilogue, a POV from Max and Emma. I did not get that. Still a great read. Yes, I would recommend.

Leavitt, PhD, Editor -- Simply put, Drug and Alcohol Abuse: A Clinical Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment; 5th edition. is a book that may help save lives. In this 380 page text, Marc A. Schuckit, MD provides an overview of drug classifications and mechanisms, and covers the pharmacology and mental/physical effects of alcohol, depressants, stimulants, opioids, hallucinogens, cannabis, and more. Most critical, there is an emphasis throughout the book on how to deal with emergency medical problems related to drug abuse, dependency, and overdose.
Schuckit, who is affiliated with the University of California Medical School and Veteran Affairs Healthcare System in San Diego, is a talented lecturer and he apparently writes like he speaks: clear and concise, technical but understandable. Comprehensive text for medical management of addictions

This year, I needed a comprehensive text to help me put together a lecture on substance use disorders for psychiatrists taking their board exams. It had been some time since I, a psychologist who conducts research on co-occurring disorders, had updated myself generally on current knowledge regarding substance use disorders. This text was very useful for this purpose; I can see it being a useful reference guide for medical practioners concerned with treating those with substance use disorders. I found Schuckit's classification of substances by their effects (depressants, stimulants, hallucinogens) rather than trying to present information on similar-acting drugs individually (cocaine, amphetamines) particularly useful. The chapters are concise and well-written and loaded with details as noted by the previous reviewer.

That said, I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because as a comprehensive guide, it gives relatively short shrift to psychosocial treatments. Whereas each chapter on drug classes goes into step-by-step detail about, for example, treating symptoms of acute withdrawal or intoxication for a particular drug class, there is only a single chapter at the end of the text regarding psychosocial treatments. That chapter is too short and lacks sufficient detail to cover recent developments such as the inclusion of evidence-based practices (e.g., motivational interviewing, trauma reduction therapies) into many treatment regimens. And although published in 2005, knowledge on pharmacological treatments in conjunction with psychosocial treatments such as the results of the recent COMBINE study (acamprosate and naltrexone plus CBT for treating alcoholism) are not included in detail.

To be fair, research is moving far too fast for any text to be completely up-to-date by the time of publication. However, this exclusion simply calls attention to the lack of coverage of psychosocial treatments generally.

In short then, this text is recommended as a primer and a guide to medical management of substance use disorders and will be of particular use to those working in emergency rooms or detoxification centers. Those working in longer term programs needing guidance on the management of addiction disorders through the post-acute and relapse management phases should consider a different text.

Normally I dislike Hugh Johnson's work

However, I must say that I did enjoy this book. While one reviewer here didn't seem to be too interested in the history of wine, I found it very interesting, so interesting in fact that I am giving my paperback version to a friend and purchasing the hardback version for myself.
What I enjoy about the historical approach is that it helps me understand just how modern wine styles evolved. For example, seeing the influence of the Napoleanic wars on British purchasing and subsequent development of new wines (like Port) was interesting.

This is one of the most comprehensive and certainly one of the most enjoyable books on wine in any language. Combining excellent prose with impressive scholarship, Mr. Johnson offers a scintillating and often enlightening history of the world's best beverage. Strongly recommended for the historian or wine enthusiast.

The most delicious wine book

Hugh Johnson's marvelous book in a partial answer to a question that few of us have had the sense to ask. While many of us will spend valuable hours wondering: `which wine?' we rarely ask `why wine?'

What's the big deal? Why so many books, why such intense feeling? Wine is just the fermented juice of grapes. Yes, and music is just organized noise and sex is merely one of the ways in which organisms ensure perpetuation of their type.

The reason for the passion isn't to be found in alcohol alone. Almost any sugary solution will support fermentation, and it seems that just about every possible sweet liquid has been fermented from time to time. An amateur winemakers' guide in my library lists recipes for the production of wines from almonds, apples, bananas, barley, beetroot, birch sap, cloves, clover, eggplant, guava, lemons, oak leaves, orange juice, parsley, parsnips, peapods, squash, tea, tomatoes, wallflowers, yarrow and yes, to complete the alphabet, zinnias.

These 'wines'are all possible, but none of them exist. In fact, we restrict our winemaking to just a few varieties of grape. Why?
Aside from the many economic advantages, the fermented juice of grapes is delicious. At its most common, it's a fresh and fruity drink that quenches the thirst and gladdens the heart. At its most exalted, the basic flavors of the grape are transformed by fermentation and aging into a symphony of aromas and tastes and lingering associations. Both the bountiful nature of grape vines and the enormous appeal of their fermented fruit's juice has led civilized man to attach a lot of meaning to wine.

Johnson's book, a slimmed down version of the earlier Vintage , not only reminds us that the question of wine's importance needs to be asked, it goes a long way to providing an answer. His range of reference is impressive and his writing-witting and incisive-is impeccable. When you're ready to try to understand how wine attained its place in the modern world, there's no better place to start than this book.

Comprehensive, thorough and unique

This book has three things going for it:
(1) It describes the DBA function as it exists in the real world. More importantly, it breaks the categories of "DBA" out into specialities, such as system DBA, data architect, analysts and modelers, developers and data warehouse DBAs - each speciality is vastly different in practice - and provides skill profiles and roles and responsibilities for each.

(2) Proposes an organizational structure for all DBAs, regardless of database (DB2, Oracle, SQL Server, etc.) and skill. As a consultant who specializes in IT organizational management and processes I heartily endorse this structure. It's also consistent with recommendations made in "IT Organization: Building A Worldclass Infrastructure " by Harris Kern, Stuart Galup and Guy Nemiro, and "Building Operational Excellence: Strategies to Improve It People and Processes" by Dale Kutnick and Bruce Allen.

(3) A complete and comprehensive listing of tasks and responsibilities for DBAs, ranging from creating the database environment to data warehouse administration, and everything in between (data modelling, performance and capacity management, tuning, back-up and recovery, etc.)

While achieving the recommendations for organizational structure is a daunting and complex task, assimilating the extensive list of tasks and recommendations can be accomplished quickly. One way to attain immediate value from this book at the organizational level is to derive database administration policies and processes from this book, and refer to this book for the procedures.

The ideal audience for this book includes IT managers who need to understand the complexity and scope of the DBA function under their cognizance, senior DBAs who want to implement consistent procedures, and HR specialists who develop job descriptions and recruit DBAs.

Highly Recommended

This is a well-written, well-organized guide to the practice of data base administration. Unlike other books on general database theory or relational database theory, this book focuses more directly on the theory and reality of database administration as practiced by database professionals today, and does so without catering too much to any specific product implementation. As such, Database Administration is very well suited to anyone interested in surveying the job of a DBA or those in similar but more specific roles such as data modeler or database performance analyst.
Yet, even with that direct focus on database administration, the author succeeds in covering a great deal of ground and cutting a rather wide swathe across the database spectrum, doing so with rigor and expertise and the benefit of experience. While the book will not and is not intended to serve as a reference substitute for product documentation, it will nonetheless enhance your knowledge, and I find it of such quality and utility that I recommend it to anyone in the database field in general. Consider it a base text to serve alongside Date and Codd.
Among the nice touches, the author includes discussion of database denormalization, often missing in discussions on database design. Chapters end with both a set of review questions and a Suggested Reading section, and I find myself in agreement with most of the suggestions. An excellent Bibliography section follows the text. I would have liked to see some discussion of the difference between relational domains in theory and their implementation in practice, particularly as it impacts the design of integrity constraints. Even so, Database Administration is an excellent book and I highly recommend it.

A great referecne on database administration

1. This is one of very few titles on general database administration. Most other similar books focus on particular DBMS products.
2. It has a very comprehensive and broad coverage on the subject. The table of contents speaks for itself. Due to its extensiveness, the coverage by and large stays at the strategic and conceptual level, which serves its purpose very well.
3. It compares features of major database products on handling similar jobs.
4. The author clearly has extensive real life DBA experience with different DBMS products and has shared that with a very easy to understand language.
5. It has good resource links.
