Hello, It's Me: Dispatches from a Pop Culture Junkie, by Chris Epting

In Hello, It’s Me, pop culture historian Chris Epting celebrates the cultural touchstones of the past 40 years—the music, movies, television, hobbies, and fads that have defined recent generations.

Whether it’s shooting hoops with NBA legend Elgin Baylor, drinking whiskey in a Radio City Music Hall broom closet with Ron Wood and Rod Stewart while thousands of fans scream from below, sharing a milkshake with Jerry Lewis, running into Alfred Hitchcock’s stomach as a young child, or jumping on a trampoline with Sally Struthers, Chris Epting takes us on his own strange trip through time, space and hula hoops.

Beginning in the 1970s and continuing through the 1980s, 1990s, and up to the present day, Epting writes about the humorous, ironic, poignant, and inspiring moments he’s experienced with a host of pop-culture icons—Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Jay Leno, Johnny Thunders, Edward Albee, John Cheever, Milton Berle, etc.—as well as his personal memories of the era’s most famous pop-culture fads, products, and gimmicks—Pet Rocks, lava lamps, mood rings, 8-track tapes, bootleg records, Zotz, halter tops, strawberry wine. . . .

Hello, It's Chris!
By Steve Goldstein
I have been a fan of Chris Epting for many years. I have no less than five of his pop culture landmark books with titles cleverly invoking the names of James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Led Zeppelin and Albert Einstein. But as the title of his latest, "Hello, It's Me," implies, this is a far more personal book. This collection of essays about the author's own personal experiences in the pop culture landscape from his teenage years in the early 1970s, up through today is the most fun I've had since living through these years myself. Chris has the added benefit of having met many of his idols, either through early writing assignments or just by the sheer luck of living in the same neighborhood as such luminaries as John Cheever or Peter Frampton. Even Keith Richards rented a home in the area, which Chris and his buddies stalked dutifully as any devoted Stones fan would.

This book is a must read for anybody who came of age during the 70s and 80s. You will relive the explosion of punk rock that was birthed at the legendary CBGB, visit the haunted motel room where folk-rock pioneer Gram Parsons died, and enjoy chance encounters with Mick Jagger, Paul Newman, Alfred Hitchcock, Jack Haley, and Herman Munster himself, Fred Gwynne.

And as a bonus, many of the stories are punctuated by commentary from many of the participants, so you get another perspective on the proceedings, not just that of the author. In this way, Chris goes even further to bring history alive in a unique and highly entertaining way.

For any fan of pop culture history, "Hello, It's Me" is a must have for your book collection.

Cultural Icons And Other Things Revisited
By R PRIUS
I enjoyed this book immensely. Chris Epting has cranked out quite a few books relating to places/things/people which have played a part in popular culture and have related to diverse topics such as baseball, movies, tv, and rock & roll. All have been fun, and this one is no exception.
This book takes a slight departure from his usual formula and delves into his own personal experiences getting into celebrities faces. I totally loved this as it gave me an odd thrill....I would never have the nerve to do that when I was a kid(or an adult for that matter), but I sure would have liked to.
Whether hanging out with Sally Struthers (Archie Bunker's daughter) and rocker Lou Gramm, hitting up Jack Haley for WIZARD OF OZ info at Sardi's, hounding a Rolling Stone's rental home, or corresponding with author John Cheever, Epting seems about as entrenched in pop culture as any person can get.
What I found easy to relate to was the trip back down memory lane. It brought back a lot of memories and also spurred on my continued interest in pop culture. If you ever read any of the 'Whatever Became of' series by Richard Lamparski you'll probably like this book. It is typical of Epting's previous books which were funny, informative, and well-written.

Pop Culture at it's Best
By the written word
I just started reading this book today and it's a winner. Chris has the ability to convey his stories on paper like our parents did with their friends years ago when we were young (you know, when they talked for hours about their lives in the living room or kitchen table after dinner).

Chris has the same sense of telling stories of our pop culture as our parents did back then, but his stories have direct ties to our own pop culture history, with lots of famous people we all can appreciate and love just as much as he does.

Add to that some time travel items like 45's and what we wore back then (ugh!) and you can just immerse yourself into his stories, relishing the nostalgia which won't be cobwebbed in the mind anymore but instead thankfully preserved in this book forever and ever. Open it up and you can reflect again and again on the past--to your heart's content!
