Gottlob Frege famously held that first-person thoughts involve a subject being 'presented to himself in a particular and primitive way, in which he is presented to no-one else.' However, as Frege also noted, this raises many puzzling questions when we consider how we are able to communicate such thoughts. Is there indeed something special about first-person thought such that it requires a primitive mode of presentation that cannot be grasped by others? If there really is something special about first-person thought, what happens when I communicate this thought to you? Do you come to believe the very thing that I believe? Or is my first-person belief only entertained by me? If it is only entertained by me, how does it relate to what you come to believe? It is these questions that the volume addresses and seeks to answer.

Manuel Garcia-Carpintero, University of Barcelona,Stephan Torre, University of Aberdeen

Manuel Garcia-Carpintero is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Barcelona, Spain. He has been a fellow at the Center for the Advanced Studies in the Humanities (Edinburgh, 2001), and he has been appointed Visiting Professor at the University of Lisbon (2013-2016). His main interests are in philosophical logic, the philosophy of language, the philosophy of mind and related epistemological and metaphysical issues.

Stephan Torre is a Lecturer at University of Aberdeen. Previously he was a post-doctoral researcher with LOGOS at the University of Barcelona and a Junior Research Fellow at Oriel College, Oxford. He received his PhD from University of Massachusetts-Amherst. His research interests are in philosophy of time, self-locating content, persistence, and modality.

Unique and interesting to explore

This is not a Tarot deck though it has 78 cards, but the images are surreal and imaginative, very suitable for interpreting dream. Not recommended for beginner because it's a complicated oracle deck. Quality of colours and such is good, as expected from Lo Scarabeo.

Dreamy Surreal Tarot Deck

The Dream Cards consist of surreal imagery that really do look like they emerged from someone's strange dreamscape. Figures morph in and out of other people and objects and you can never be quite sure of the setting in which the images occur. Some of the card images can be unsettling to some people, but overall, they are fascinating.

Prior to using this deck I examined the imagery for several days before I even attempted to do a reading just because it is so highly unusual and thought-provoking.

The deck is very useful from an intuitive sense. The accompanying booklet does give thorough explanations as to the cards' meanings (many of which do not correspond with a traditional tarot deck), however, I find the deck more useful if one does not refer to the booklet at all. The images alone help your intuitive side to come up with its own interpretations. As you examine the images it makes your mind look at them as if you're remembering one of your own dreams. We've all done that - had a really weird dream, we wake up and think to ourselves, "what the ...?" Then we sit there and attempt to figure out what our dream may mean to us. That is how these cards make you think. Sometimes you can't make heads or tails out of the imagery and your intuitive brain kicks into full gear and you find your OWN meaning to the card, then you move on to the next card in your spread.

I really enjoy this deck and have been recommending it to my tarot students because it is a valuable tool that will help users connect more fully with their intuition. You don't need the little guidebook that accompanies this deck. Trust your own intuition when you view the images and you'll see just how incredibly accurate your own readings can be for you.

I recommend this deck more for those who have used a variety of tarot and oracle decks, but I also believe that beginners can get a lot out of it, as well.

NOT a tarot deck but a dream interpretation oracle deck

This is a fantastic oracle deck with 78 cards like a tarot deck but it doesn't have a major arcana, minor arcana nor court cards. In fact, they are numbered 1 through 78. Unlike what the previous reviews have mentioned, it is NOT a tarot deck at all. Even though there are 78 cards. The images on the cards are very evocative and allow for your intuition to roam free. There are titles for each card which correspond to a particular them to look out for when it appears in ones dreams. The LWB (Little White Book) is disappointing to say the least. While it does contain interesting spreads, upright and reversed meanings, it really doesn't go into how to use the cards themselves. Which can be confusing for those who are unfamiliar with oracle decks or dream interpretation. Not to mention the layout on how to use each spread has been left out or vaguely written. I would recommend getting a good dream dictionary to use alongside it. The cardstock is disappointingly flimsy which means the cards will not last the test of time. The multilingual borders (while useful) can be quite distracting to look when reading the cards for many people. I would like to see a guidebook written for this deck as it has so much potential. But overall I would recommend this deck, if not for the evocative images that trigger your intuition.

Not the US edition but great condition

While the book I ordered claims to be the US edition its obviously not just by the way the word organization is spelled with s instead of z. In addition on page 79 it gives an explanation of the lifetime value of a customer and uses the symbol for pounds instead of US dollars. Other then that the book is in good condition and hopefully the case studies and examples are not different or I will be in trouble in the upcoming weeks of class.

It is Ok as a text book. Requires supporting hands-on samples or problems to do, probably with a supportive web page or web/mobile application, at least a blog.

Rick Rogers has been a professional embedded software engineer and software marketing manager for over 30 years. He has focused on mobile application software for the past 8 years, developing mobile software and strategic mobile engineering and marketing plans for companies such as Compaq, Intel, and Marvell Semiconductor.

John Lombardo has been working with Linux since version 0.9. His first book, Embedded Linux, was published in 2001. Since then he's worked on several embedded products, including phones and routers. John holds a BS in Computer Science and is working on his MBA.

Zigurd Mednieks is Chief User Interface Architect at D2 Technologies, a leading provider of IP communications technology, and is a consultant and advisor to companies in the field of embedded user interfaces. He has held senior management positions at companies making mobile games, communications equipment, and computer telephony applications, and has written and contributed to books on programming and communications technology.

Blake Meike has more than 10 years of experience with Java. He has developed applications using most of the GUI toolkits and several of the Java mobile device platforms. He likes Android a lot.

Very Poorly Written

First of all I was expecting a lot more from an o'reilly collection.

Secondly there is no difference in this book than looking up online help and reading android documentation. Why would I waste money on a book.

This book is also not very well organized to have a good learning experience. To me it looks like a blob. So far Hello, Android: Introducing Google's Mobile Development Platform has proven to be the best Android book out there.

Also I was expecting more 1.5 coverage in this book since it was released after Android 1.5 SDK was available.

Extremely well written book

Except for the fact that this book lacks an overview of Android 1.5, which I suspect will be in the next addition; I do not understand the bad reviews of this book.

Whenever I read a technical book on a new language or new platform, there are five specific things I look for:

1. Does the book contain a short, clear introduction that gives a little bit of history on the subject matter and states the purpose and intent of the book?
2. Does the book quickly present me with the ubiquitous "Hello World" example so that I'm immediately gratified, producing my first working program?
3. Does each chapter contain a summary? I like to read the summary first so that I know what knowledge I will gain from the chapter.
4. Does the content and knowledge contained in each chapter build on the content and knowledge gained from previous chapters?
5. Is the attention to detail in each chapter sufficient enough that I have truly gained some information that will allow me to be immediately productive in the subject matter?

If you look for these things in this book, you will find them in spades.

If you're looking for a book that will help you thoroughly understand the ins and outs of the android platform, you will want this book in your arsenal.

If one takes the time to read this book in its entirety, you will most likely become very proficient and comfortable writing android applications. This book will then become an excellent reference manual that you may refer to often.

Only minimal coverage of actually writing applications.

I was expecting a lot more from this book, considering my respect for ORA. I was expecting something with the rigor of K&R and got something on par with "... For Dummies". The book presents the obligatory "hello world", discusses it briefly, and then plops a fully complete application on the reader's lap. Instead of building the application up from the ground, the book explains how the full application works. I'm not a neophyte developer; I could garner the same knowledge from looking at one of the open source Android applications (like the many apps in the source tree). I was hoping for a walkthrough for an unfamiliar environment, but rather received a technical review of a finished application. Most unhelpful. Here's hoping ORA realizes how this book failed and reinvent it in a second edition.

Great starter grammar

Personally, I learn a new language better if I have a good overall view of the framework of its grammar and syntax. Wightwick and Gaafar have written a quick and dirty primer for those who already have more indepth grammatic references, but need to know how it all fits together without getting buried in 450+ pages over a period of 6 to 12 months.

You'll need to know your alphabet ( I suggest Awde & Samano's 'The Arabic Alphabet'), and serious students cannot rely on this book for their main course of study; however, this book has done more for my progession than any other single book or system. Since I've made it through 'Easy Arabic Grammar' (which took me all of about 3 weeks, others could probably blow through it in much less time), most of my subsequent studies have consisted of following up on subjects I've already been introduced to, instead of learning entirely new concepts.

Excellent Guide to Arabic Script

This is an excellent guide for learning how to write in Arabic script. It is a short book which skips on most other elements of the language. However, this short (and thus encouraging) book covers the two prevalent forms of Arabic script - naskh and ruq'a, typeset and handwritten forms respectively. All 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet are covered, along with a pronunciation guide and numbers 1 through 10 (which is appropriate given the focus on simply writing/reading).

The guides are very detailed and obvious, giving clear examples of not only what the letters look like, but also how to effectively write them (i.e. where to start, finish, and lift your pen). There is practice space in the book to both trace examples and then practice on your own; however, it is probably a good idea to have your own paper and access to a photocopier if you wish to trace the more complicated symbols more than a couple times.

Presented in a compact and well organized form this book provides an excellent way to learn to read and write Arabic script. I'd highly recommend it for anyone that is looking to polish their skills or learn from scratch. And with practical examples and further practice guides this book will take you well beyond simply writing out the alphabet and numbers.

Easy Arabic Script

This is an excellent initiation to writing Arabic script. It is concise yet comprehensive. What it is not is a source of vocabulary nor of grammar. If you want to learn how to read printed Arabic and learn Arabic handwriting, I recommend you begin with this book. You may not even need a second.

About the Author

Professor Sushil is Abdulaziz Alsagar Chair Professor (Professor of Strategic, Flexible Systems and Technology Management), and Chair, Strategic Management Group at the Department of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India. He has served as Visiting Professor and delivered seminars in many leading universities; some representative ones are University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, Stevens Institute of Technology, NJ, University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, Paris, among others. He is an active researcher and supervised more than 50 doctoral dissertations. He is having eighteen books to his credit in the areas of Flexibility, Strategy, Systems Thinking, and Technology Management. He has over 250 papers in various refereed journals and conferences. He has pioneered the area of ‘Flexible Systems Management’ and made original contributions to the field of knowledge in the form of interpretive approaches in management. He is the Founder Editor-in-chief of Global Journal of Flexible Systems Management and serving on the Editorial Boards of leading international journals. He is the Founder President of the professional body, ‘Global Institute of Flexible Systems Management’. Currently he is serving as Independent Director on the Boards of RINL, HSCC, and River Engineering.

Gerhard Chroust is Professor Emeritus for Systems Engineering and Automation, Institute of System Sciences, Johannes Kepler University of Linz, Austria. From 1992 until 2007 he was Professor for 'Systems Engineering and Automation' at the Kepler University of Linz and Department Head of the Department (in 2004 transferred into an Institute) of Systems Engineering and Automation from 1992 until 2007. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the IFSR Newsletter, Chairperson of the Editorial Board of the Book Series of the Austrian Computer Society (OCG), and Editorial Board Member of several journals. He has written, co-authored and edited a dozen books and over 400 articles, papers and other publications. His research interests are in the fields of Software Engineering (Representation and Enactment of Software Process Models, Quality and Improvement of Development Processes), Systems Science and Systemic Aspects of Engineering, Emergence, History of Computers and Information Technology, and Human Aspects of Software Development.
