Fantastic book!

Wow I can't believe no reviews have been written to date for this excellent book. It's kind of a cross between New Breed and the Chapin book, but transcends both with respect to depth of material, gradually unfolding levels of complexity, and, in my opinion, overall practical benefit to the player once he/she masters the progressive coordination goals. This isn't another left-hand/right-foot workout while the right hand does spang-a-lang and the left foot clicks two and four; there is a good deal of focus on snare-hihat and kick-hihat interdependence. If you've worked through the John Riley books you should be able to hit the ground running in the initial coordination modules of this book, but you may find some interesting challenges once you delve further and further into the pages. I really enjoy working through the exercises, and I highly recommend this book for intermediate to advanced drummers.

About the Author

James M. Beard, Ph.D., earned a BA in chemistry from Manchester College (now Manchester University) in 1965 and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Stanford University in 1969. After two years of teaching chemistry at Manchester College, he pursued a career as a clinical chemist. During the next 12 years, Dr. Beard worked as a product developer, quality control consultant, and administrator in both hospital and industry settings. Since 1988, Dr. Beard has been a member of the faculty at Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina, where he is a professor of chemistry. Dr. Beard’s major interest at Catawba has been in environmental chemical education.

not meant for a traditional bow.

I assume it is good for people who shoot fancy compound bows hung about with all kinds of gizmos. But I wish I had known it is not meant for a traditional bow. There was very little that I found applicable. There was good info on body posture, and the why and how of a smooth draw and release. But I don't use, have or want the release device he spent so much time going on about & I don't have or want sights, so the bulk of the book was irrelevant to me. The instructions about keeping back tension were too brief, in my opinion, and too dependent on the release device as a learning aide ( re: if it goes off when it should, apparently that means you did it right... well, I don't have that device, so...) If you want advice on shooting a traditional bow - look elsewhere.

A very good book- with one small reservation.

An excellent book for beginning archers. The explanation and teaching in the musculature and psychological aspects of archery form are extremely well presented and illustrated. The one small reservation is that there is no warning other than the front page graphic that the book is 99.9% intended for users of compound bows and trigger releases. There is almost an entire chapter exclusively discussing trigger releases and techniques to the exclusion of recurve release techniques.

Potential users of recurve bows using finger tab or glove release will find very short shrift with only a few paragraphs and photos pertaining to finger release.

Despite this minor shortfall, the great majority of the book on form, muscle involvement, psychology and aiming, refers equally and thoroughly to either recurve or compound archery.

A chapter specifically discussing finger release techniques and arrow flight effects with tabs or gloves would have been helpful- the author clearly understands recurve bow use but chose to give it very minimal coverage, concentrating on the compound bow in discussion and illustrations.

Very Good Information on Shooting Technique

I really liked this book. The book is geared toward compound shooters but the principles of the establishment of regimented routine form integrated with mental concentration are invaluable to all archers. The book's main information is about developing regimented routine of reproducing physical mechanics of setting up and shooting a successful shot over and over. I found the final 2 chapters about Aiming and the Mental Game of Archery very helpful. The mental game chapter was great and I would recommend the book based on that chapter alone. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in archery and improving skills and consistency.

The before and after pictures of the author inspire me to give his diet a try. I'm not new to this dieting stuff, and I'm not naive about nutrition. I am diabetic, and I recognize in Gregg's diet a good diabetic diet--mainly fruits and grains. If Gregg can do what he has done for his body, I can do it for mine! Thanks for the inspiration, Gregg.

A lot of diets are tough for people that work and have to bring lunch with them. This book has a lot of good tips for people who can't always eat at home or have to have business dinners. Quick. Simple. Efficient. In other words, a plan my busy life can incorporate!

Staged Reviews???

Heard this guy on a radio show, he seems to have a cute personality and his before and after pics look awesome. His site however looks a lot like other gimmick sites out there... "19.99 for the secrets the diet industry doesn't want you to know"... I'm just sayn'! Also the reviews (most of them) say pretty much the same exact same thing "he tells it like it is", and I'm always wary when the majority of these 5 star reviewers have but ONE review to their credit, this ONE. I think I will check my local library before I lay down the cash for this book of "secrets".

3-Tier Arch. Review

I really liked it as beginner's tutorial. I plan on actually using it for a future training session. It is clear and concise and covers all the necessary material without diverting into excessive or redundant explanations. I would have given it five stars, however I really feel the author should have included the namespace declaration in the code samples of each of the layers instead of only referring to adding the layer to a layer namespace in the text. Also, I think it would have been best to have used different field, class parameter, procedure parameter, and variable names in each of the layers to delineate the separation of the layers to the beginner, demonstrating how values in one layer are not the same but are past from one layer to next via the class/object methods parameter usage.

Good Beginning for 3 tier Architecture, but many errors

The book gave me a good start in the implementing the concept of 3 tier Architecture in asp. I liked how short and strait to the point presentation of the book. it took me 1 hour to grasp the initial concepts of 3 tier Architecture.

However, the book contains a lot of minor errors in the code that might interfere with the reader's learning process. For instance, the SP in the database used for listing the "persons" has a WHERE condition to show a single record and the SP has to be supplied with a person ID, whereas in the application it is being called without supplying the person ID in the code and it is intended to be used to list all the records in the persons table. I had to make corrections here and there to make the code work. Unless the reader is alert about those mistakes, he or she might get stuck trying to run the codes.

I advise the author to review the book and correct any mistakes there

Grade 3-6-- Wayside School is 30 stories high with only one room on each floor. On the top floor is Mrs. Jewls' class, where order has been abandoned in favor of nonsense and silliness. Each of the 30 stories in this collection features an unusual vignette or character sketch. The stories are only loosely tied together, and many have a shaggy dog quality. While adult readers may be left quizzical, children who relish the ridiculous will enjoy themselves tremendously. With bad puns, extended jokes, and an irreverent attitude, Sachar keeps his readers amused. Wayside School is Falling Down

Do you like action, comedy, laughs, and good times? If you do then read Wayside School is Falling Down by Louis Sachar. It's about the funny and strange things that happen in Wayside school. It's one of the funniest books I have ever read.
An example of one of the funny moments was when the author wrote a whole chapter backwards! I realized the chapter was backwards after I read it forwards. What was especially interesting and funny though was that the girl in the chapter does everything backwards.
Another funny instance is that the school is thirty floors high. What's even funnier is there is only one classroom on each floor! Also there is no nineteenth floor. A different funny thing is in another chapter a girl goes on the nineteenth floor even though there isn't one.
I enjoyed the book very much. It was funny and each chapter wasn't long. You should read this book if you don't like reading. This is because it is almost like reading a book of jokes. It's not long and it's funny. You should read this book.

Hilarious and should be read with your kids!

This book is down-right funny. Goofy even! I think it is one of the funnier, insane books for kids out there. Each chapter brings a whole new meaning to fun as you read about all the students in Mrs. Jewls's class. Trust me when I say you will love it! If you really want to have a good time while reading a book, this one is for you.

Does Johnny Hate to Read?

Louis Sachar has found a way to combine a child's wacky way of viewing the world, clever plays on words, phrases, and chapters(!!), and a cast of quirky characters to produce a set of books that will coax any reader to keep on reading.
The third of his Wayside School series, Sachar turns the school upside-down, and, in the process, guarantees entertaining reading for adult and child alike. I particularly enjoy the audio version of the book, since the "voice" on tape successfully makes each character's persona his own.
This is a book that your child (and you!) will find yourself reading over and over, discovering new meanings in different passages each time.
Mr. Sachar, keep writing!!
